Gravel plant reduces fuel consumption by 60 percent with SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid

Since the beginning of 2025, August Oppermann Kiesgewinnungs- und Vertriebs GmbH has been using a SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid at its Vienenburg gravel plant. The material handler handles the central gravel extraction there, combining high conveying capacity with significantly reduced fuel consumption: up to 200 tons of gravel per hour, 1,500 tons per day in single-shift operation, and around 72 tons less CO2 emissions per year.

Challenge: Extracting gravel economically and in a resource-efficient manner

August Oppermann GmbH is a long-established company with over 150 years of experience in the extraction and processing of natural raw materials. With approximately 30 locations and 120 employees, the company operates in Lower Saxony, Hesse, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt. Its product range includes high-quality building materials such as sand, gravel, limestone, and greywacke.

At the Vienenburg gravel plant, the central gravel extraction process needed to be efficient, reliable, and as fuel-efficient as possible. The requirement was for a machine that could stand securely on loose ground, reach great working depths, and deliver high daily outputs during operation.

Solution: SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid as a central material handler

On January 28, 2025, the new SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid was officially commissioned at the Vienenburg gravel plant. Since then, the material handler has been responsible for the central gravel extraction at the site.

The machine is equipped for demanding use in the gravel pit with:

  • 237 kW diesel engine
  • 21 m equipment length
  • 2.45 m³ spoon
  • Crawler undercarriage for secure footing and mobility
  • Working depth of up to 12 m
  • Maxcab driver’s cab, hydraulically height-adjustable up to 3 m
  • Tempered glass, air conditioning, sun blinds, Bluetooth and DAB radio

This allows the SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid to achieve a throughput of up to 200 tons of gravel per hour and up to 1,500 tons per day in single-shift operation. According to field data, this surpasses the performance of a comparable cable excavator with a dragline bucket.

Green Hybrid System reduces energy consumption during the lifting cycle

A key reason for the low fuel consumption is the SENNEBOGEN Green Hybrid recuperation system . When the boom is lowered, energy is temporarily stored via an additional hydraulic cylinder and nitrogen piston accumulator . This energy is then available again for the next lifting operation.

The system thus supports the work cycle directly where a lot of energy is needed in gravel handling: during the repeated lifting and lowering of the work equipment.

24 liters per hour and 72 tons of CO2 savings per year

Despite its high flow rate, the SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid has an average fuel consumption of just 24 liters per hour. Compared to its predecessor, this represents a reduction of approximately 60 percent.

Why is the SENNEBOGEN 855 E Hybrid suitable for gravel extraction?

The crawler undercarriage ensures stability on loose ground while simultaneously enabling mobility within the gravel pit. The long working extension reaches a working depth of up to 12 m , thus supporting the efficient dredging of gravel.

The hydraulically elevating Maxcab cabin offers the operator excellent visibility of the work area, material flow, and surroundings. Bulletproof glass enhances safety during operation. Comfort features such as air conditioning, sunshades, Bluetooth, and DAB radio improve working conditions in daily operations.
