Groundwater lowering for the South-East-Link

A particularly impressive example of this is the groundwater lowering for the South-East Link – a planned direct current underground cable line that will run from the far north-east to the far south-east in Germany. The construction sites for the future power line next to the Wörth/Wiesent exit of the A3 motorway were already opened in March 2025 and will remain in operation for several months. In order for the pipes for the underground cable line to be laid, the groundwater must first be lowered and then raised again later. Hölscher Wasserbau, an absolute professional in well construction and water drainage, was commissioned to drill the wells.

Heinz Hölscher also relies on the duty cycle crawler crane solution from SENNEBOGEN: “The 27-ton duty cycle crane is the perfect solution for us for well construction. We were looking for a compact, powerful, and versatile machine that is easy to use and ready for immediate deployment on the construction site. SENNEBOGEN built it especially for us.”

Easy setup and user-friendly operation

The special machines prove to be quickly ready-to-use base units for rope operations and the attachment of casing machines. The folding box boom, with which the duty cycle cranes are equipped instead of the lattice boom, can be moved into the transport position in just a few steps, making the machine easy to transport ‒ without any additional permits. This ensures flexibility on changing construction sites. The intuitive operation is also highly appreciated by machine operators. It has been specially adapted to the customer’s requirements. The same applies to the innovative design of the boom, which further improves Hölscher’s typical work processes.

Maintenance, service and operability – decisive plus points

One major advantage is the outstanding ease of maintenance. All areas are easily accessible for technicians, the documentation is clearly structured, and the machine can be set up and dismantled very quickly. Safety has also been further optimized: the bolts for the mast can be conveniently inserted from the ground.

Added to this is the high reliability of the special duty cycle cranes and the entire SENNEBOGEN portfolio. Even the older models owned by Hölscher are still running smoothly today.

WELL DRILLING WITH CASING MACHINE

At the current South-East Link construction site in Wörth/Wiesent, crane operators André Tinius and Hagen Fiebig are constructing around twelve wells per construction site. Equipped with the casing machine, the machine first drives the drill pipe into the ground. The soil material inside the drill pipe is then excavated with the grab before the well can be inserted. It is then filled with filter gravel and the drill pipe is pulled out again. All this is done with just one machine, which can precisely operate the attached implements and perform lifting operations. Thanks to various equipment options and variable mast lengths, which Hölscher itself helped to develop, the machine is extremely versatile and can be used both as a powerful cable excavator and as a crane.

If everything goes according to plan, a well can be constructed within just a few hours. Once the 12 wells have been built, the next construction site will be tackled. Overall, the groundwater lowering project near Wörth/Wiesent is scheduled to run until the end of March 2026. Once the groundwater has been lowered, the actual pipes for the underground cables can be welded together and laid. The wells are then removed and the groundwater can return. Finally, the power cable is pulled into the empty pipes. Well construction and water drainage are an important part of the challenging civil engineering work that will continue for several years.

At IFAT 2026 in Munich, SENNEBOGEN will present efficient and sustainable solutions for modern material handling in the recycling industry. Trade visitors will gain a comprehensive insight into the broad portfolio of recycling and demolition machines and experience the world premiere of the SENNEBOGEN MG4.1 multi-shell grab.

SENNEBOGEN at IFAT 2026: Experience the Big Recycling Future

From May 4 to 7, 2026, SENNEBOGEN will be showcasing the diversity of its recycling and demolition machinery live at the world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste, and raw materials management. The company will occupy over 526 m² of exhibition space in Hall C5, Stand No. 451, as well as in the VDMA outdoor area . Eight different machines, including material handlers , demolition excavators , and telescopic handlers , will demonstrate the performance and flexibility of SENNEBOGEN solutions for the recycling industry. Furthermore, the machinery manufacturer will be presenting its first in-house developed and produced multi-shell grab , the MG4.1.

In addition, at the adjacent stand 551 there is a separate presentation for the LINDE YH60 telescopic loader, which is produced by SENNEBOGEN and distributed via the LINDE network in Germany and Austria.

World premiere: The original SENNEBOGEN multi-shell grab MG4.1

A particular highlight at IFAT 2026 in Munich is the unveiling of the first five-shell multi-shell grab developed by SENNEBOGEN, the MG4.1 600 – 1,200 liter capacity. Traditionally used in scrap handling , this grab further expands the manufacturer’s portfolio in the recycling sector . Here, too, SENNEBOGEN has incorporated its more than 30 years of experience in material handling to offer a perfectly coordinated, turnkey solution: for maximum performance, high availability, and a precisely matched system of machine and attachment.

Complete machine portfolio for efficient recycling processes

Visitors to the SENNEBOGEN booth can expect to see three particularly powerful and individually configurable machines:

The 830 recycling all-rounder from the new G-Series, exhibited with a 17 m compact boom and the new MG 4.1 multi-shell grab, can now be made even more sustainable thanks to two new options: Firstly, like all SENNEBOGEN recycling and material handling excavators, it can now also be purchased with CO2-reduced steel, which already results in up to 70% fewer CO2 emissions during production (more information on the cooperation with Salzgitter AG can be found here: https://www.sennebogen.com/news/news-presse/sennebogen-praesentiert-umschlagbagger-aus-gruenem-stahl .)

Secondly, it can be equipped with the SENNEBOGEN Hybrid System. This energy recovery system consists of a gas pressure accumulator integrated at the rear and an additional hydraulic cylinder on the boom . When the boom is lowered, the energy generated – similar to a compressed spring – is temporarily stored in the nitrogen accumulator. During the subsequent lifting operation, this energy is then available to the lifting cylinders. This technology has proven itself in large machines for many years and enables fuel savings of around 30% .

This is accompanied by the battery-powered 824 G Electro Battery recycling material handler with a 12 m reach. This battery-powered excavator enables completely CO2-emission-free material handling. Thanks to its modular battery concept, the machine can be precisely configured for different operating profiles. Depending on requirements, up to four battery packs can be integrated and, if necessary, added later – for maximum adaptability and investment security. Furthermore, the material handler can operate both on battery power alone and with a wired power supply during charging. This makes it ideally suited for efficient shift work.

Another highlight of the exhibition is the 6-tonne 360 G telescopic handler , presented with a 6 m³ bucket and boasting numerous new features and options. Foremost among these is the new, optional joystick steering system, unique in this machine class. This system is available either as the sole control option or as part of a dual operating concept in combination with a conventional steering wheel. This gives customers maximum flexibility in machine configuration: depending on the specific application and operator preference, they can freely choose whether the telescopic handler should be equipped with conventional steering wheel controls, joystick steering alone, or the combined dual system . Further new features include a completely new, standard-fit comfort seat with a high backrest and a camera with person detection, a redesigned boom with improved power absorption and robustness, an optional front guard, and an expanded range of tires and attachments.

SENNEBOGEN is also presenting the 6-tonne telescopic handler in the LINDE version . In addition to the new features found on the green version, this model is equipped with a Dücker UNA 450 boom . This allows the operation of a wide variety of attachments, from verge mowers and hedge trimmers to sweepers, enabling year-round use of the machine, especially in municipal applications.

SENNEBOGEN action on the VDMA outdoor area

SENNEBGOEN has a lot to offer not only at its trade fair stand, but also at the demonstrations in the VDMA outdoor area. In the biomass sector, the 822 G recycling excavator with a 10 m reach, which will also be available in electric and battery-powered versions in the future, as well as the 826 G Electro Battery and the 4 t LINDE YH40 telescopic handler , will demonstrate their capabilities.

In Breda, Netherlands, the electric SENNEBOGEN 653 Electro Battery crane supported the construction of a modern bus depot for electric buses. Using emission-free construction equipment like this crane, the project in the Dutch province of North Brabant focused on sustainable construction site operations and promoted the environmentally friendly expansion of public transport. The depot, which houses, charges, and maintains electric buses, was completed in 2025.

The construction company Van der Ven BV from Brakel has been in business for over 55 years and focuses its activities, among other things, on infrastructure construction. The bus depot construction site is located directly adjacent to a nature reserve, making the minimization of nitrogen oxide emissions particularly important. The crane also proved its capabilities in practical use. Continuous operation for a full day, or even two, is easily possible during stationary work. Sufficient capacity is always available to reliably complete the workday. In everyday operation, the operator notices no difference whether the pump is driven by the diesel or electric motor.

Sustainable material handling and high performance are not mutually exclusive – quite the opposite: At DEUMU’s steel scrap recycling facility in Salzgitter, the SENNEBOGEN 830 G impressively demonstrates how CO₂ reduction and efficiency can work together in practice. The 40-tonne material handler, made from CO₂-reduced “green steel,” operates on a roughly 40-hectare, trimodally connected scrap yard. There, it performs a variety of tasks in the recycling process – from unloading ships to loading railcars and trucks. Through the use of CO₂-reduced steel and its low-emission operation, this material handler contributes to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions.

Decarbonizing the steel industry: DEUMU focuses on sustainable material handling machines

Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union GmbH (DEUMU) was founded in 1941 and has ensured the supply of raw materials to the steel industry for decades. As a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, DEUMU is consistently pursuing the goal of decarbonizing the steel industry. A key component of this is the use of modern SENNEBOGEN material handlers, which themselves actively contribute to CO₂ reduction, resource conservation , and the circular economy .

Material handling machine made of green steel: Sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle

The steel for the excavator comes from the Salzgitter Group’s electric arc furnace production line. By using recycled scrap and 100% green electricity, CO2 emissions are reduced by over 70% compared to conventionally produced steel in blast furnaces .

DEUMU supplied steel components for the new SENNEBOGEN 830 G made from precisely this green steel . In its subsequent use, the machine will again be employed in steel scrap handling – thus completing the material cycle.

Uwe Rehren, Managing Director of DEUMU, emphasizes: “We deliberately use CO₂-reduced products at our scrap yard because the Salzgitter Group explicitly wants to play a pioneering role in this area. The new recycling excavator is part of SENNEBOGEN’s latest generation of machines and operates around 20% more efficiently than its predecessor. This results in additional savings of 18.5 tons of CO₂ per year during operation .”

Versatile recycling excavator for trimodal scrap logistics

The 40-tonne SENNEBOGEN 830 G material handler with a 17-meter reach is used flexibly on the DEUMU site wherever high handling capacities are required. Typical areas of application include:

Ship unloading	in the raw material sector (up to 650 tons of scrap metal in 1.5 days, loaded directly into the trucks)
loading	from finished scrap to rail
envelope	from new scrap metal and sheet metal waste
feed	from plants with shredded feedstock (e.g. end-of-life vehicles)

The machine operates 365 days a year in three shifts and covers long distances due to its large surface area. An integrated contamination monitoring system on the gripper ensures safety by detecting and excluding radioactive materials at an early stage .

The internationally operating wood processing company SIA Krauzers is optimizing material flow in its newly built sawmill with two SENNEBOGEN 730 E pick & carry machines. In addition to a standard 730 E for internal logistics, the company uses a second machine with a trailer, ideal for longer distances between the log yard and the sorting system.

Modern sawmill sets new standards in timber logistics

SIA Krauzers, based in Talsi, Latvia, has over 25 years of experience in forestry, log handling , and wood processing. With a clear export focus – 100% of its products are shipped to countries including the UK, USA, Canada, India, and the UAE – the company continuously invests in modern technology. Following the commissioning of a new sorting line in 2020, the next strategic step was taken in 2025: a modern sawmill with two log yards.

SIA Krauzers increases efficiency in the sawmill with SENNEBOGEN Pick & Carry

The impetus for investing in the SENNEBOGEN 730 E series arose after a delegation trip to German-speaking countries. During visits to several sawmills in Germany and Austria, the pick & carry concept was immediately convincing.

“The maneuverability, the flexible use and above all the stability when transporting large loads immediately appealed to us. With Pick & Carry, we can use our warehouse space much more efficiently ,” explains Andis Araks, Managing Director of SIA Krauzers.

TWO SENNEBOGEN 730 E – PERFECTLY SUITED TO DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS

At the first log yard, Krauzers uses a SENNEBOGEN 730 E without a trailer . The machine handles sorting, transferring , and feeding the system directly on site. The elevating cab offers optimal visibility and enables efficient work even in confined spaces.

For the second log yard, a SENNEBOGEN 730 E Pick & Carry machine with a specially sized trailer was chosen . This allows the team to handle even longer distances of 300 to 600 meters per trip particularly economically. The trailer transports more wood per cycle than a conventional wheel loader and simultaneously offers better traction, greater stability, and fewer cycles.

What ensures safety and efficiency in biomass handling?

Efficient and safe processes are crucial in biomass utilization. With the collaboration of GAP and its Italian distribution partner Cesaro Mac Import, the new SENNEBOGEN 360 G telescopic handler has been developed from prototype to series production. GAP is part of the Piantoni Group, operates a fleet of over 780 machines, and specializes in logistics and material handling processes across various industries.

“It’s the machine we wanted and that we helped develop.”

“We always say with a certain pride: It’s the machine we wanted and that we helped develop, ” explains Alberto Gallini, Head of GAP Service. The company was involved in the testing from the very beginning. Together with SENNEBOGEN and Cesaro , numerous detailed improvements were tested, implemented , and incorporated into series production. “We noted ten points for improvement on the prototype, and in the end, all of them were implemented. That’s real added value,” says Gallini.

Energy efficiency, throughput and CO₂ balance

GAP operates several biomass processing plants in northern Italy, where organic waste is converted into energy. Machine performance plays a crucial role here: every movement determines energy efficiency, throughput, and CO₂ balance. “We wanted a machine specifically designed for this process,” explains Gallini. “The 360 G is not only powerful but also economical, directly supporting our sustainability strategy .”

In the biomass storage facility in Finale Emilia, the 360 G operates up to 24 hours a day in three shifts. It handles the loading and unloading of organic material, feeds conveyor lines , and compacts bulk materials in containers. Thanks to its Z-bar linkage, it can effortlessly pick up compacted material. The geometry of the boom, combined with the loading arm, allows the telescopic handler to achieve up to 20% higher container density. This reduces transport journeys, energy consumption , and emissions, directly contributing to CO₂ reduction throughout the entire process chain.

Safety and efficiency at a glance

Safety and efficiency in biomass utilization result from the interplay of several factors:

Optimal view	The cabin, which can be raised to eye level of 4.25 m, offers a 360° view of the work area, important when loading, unloading or compacting biomass.
Stable construction:	The robust construction ensures smooth movements and high stability, even under continuous load.
Quick tool change:	Different attachments can be changed quickly, which reduces downtime.
Sensitive hydraulics:	The control system enables precise work and increases productivity .
Ergonomic workplace:	The comfortable cabin increases driver concentration and safety . Marcello Cannavacciuolo, Supervisor at GAP, describes it as follows: “I feel absolutely safe in this telescopic handler. Every movement is precise and stable – the telescopic handler gives me confidence.”

High responsiveness in continuous operation

The 360 G operates almost around the clock in biomass processing. The quick change of attachments and the sensitive hydraulics ensure short cycle times and high efficiency. “The telescopic handler reacts quickly, is powerful and extremely stable, perfectly tailored to our requirements,” summarizes Cannavacciuolo.

The 360 G also impresses compared to conventional wheel loaders. “If I have to choose between a wheel loader and the 360 G, I always choose the 360 G,” says Gallini. “The telescopic boom, the elevating cab , and the versatility make all the difference. The stability is outstanding, and working with it feels natural.”

“You buy the service first, then the machine.”

The success of the 360 G speaks for itself: “Our drivers don’t even want to use the other machines anymore,” says Gallini. “Two more 360 Gs have already been ordered; we will gradually convert the fleet.” GAP is thus pursuing a clear strategy: machines developed from practical experience offer the greatest long-term benefits. “You buy the service first, then the machine, and if both are right, you stick with it,” Gallini summarizes.

This shows that safety and efficiency in biomass utilization depend directly on clarity, stability, ergonomics and reliability , key building blocks for sustainable processes in the circular economy.

Increased flexibility in the gravel pit

With the expansion of the extraction area, the Bokshorn gravel pit also needed to acquire a new extraction machine: efficiency and flexibility were top priorities. The SENNEBOGEN 6100 E crawler crane proved to be a tailor-made solution for the gravel plant, perfectly meeting its requirements and also boasting low fuel consumption.

The extraction area of the gravel pit has been expanded.

The Bokshorn gravel pit in Porta Westfalica, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a family business steeped in tradition. Founded in 1882, the gravel plant – now at its third location – still produces around 150,000 tons of sand and gravel annually for the concrete industry, including prefabricated construction and paving stone manufacturing. When the current managing partner, Henrik Franke, took over the business from his father in 2024, the gravel pit’s extraction area was expanded. To be prepared for the new area, the machinery also needed to be updated. The old, but inflexible, electric scraper system was thus replaced by the 100-ton SENNEBOGEN 6100 HD crawler crane .

TAILOR-MADE FOR USE

“When I was looking for a more flexible solution for our expanded extraction area, I quickly came across SENNEBOGEN’s crawler cranes. Through the dealer Louis Scheuch, we were able to initially get a feel for our needs with a 70-ton rental machine and ultimately opted for the 100-ton crawler crane with a 3.5 cubic yard dragline bucket ,” reports the managing director of the gravel plant. “For us, efficiency is more important than speed. We want to operate sustainably and fully utilize the gravel deposit’s capacity . Therefore, the desired digging depth of 12 meters determined the machine size.” Thanks to the Fairlead and the deflection pulleys integrated into the boom, the crawler crane’s cable is guided optimally and gently. The machine and dragline bucket can be controlled safely and precisely, and dredging can be carried out gently and with the highest accuracy . The 29.9 m long lattice boom, which is ideal for heavy, dynamic operation in the gravel pit, also allows the material to be lifted with the dragline bucket far in front of the machine, thus allowing the edge to be left standing for as long as possible.

Flexible throughout the entire terrain

“All in all, the new cable excavator solution is significantly more efficient, elegant , and flexible for us than before. And that’s not just in terms of location,” Franke continued.

Thanks to the crawler undercarriage, the gravel plant’s employees can easily move the 6100 HD to wherever it’s needed at any given moment. The applications it has already been used for are correspondingly diverse : from renaturation projects to digging a channel for the uninterrupted water supply of the pump – a task that would otherwise have required contracting out to an external company. Currently, the machine is back in operation in the old extraction area. This, too, poses no problem for the new, flexible cable excavator, which, unlike the old system, doesn’t require a power supply.

…and a journey with a resounding success. Everyone contributed to ensuring that we ultimately have a tailor-made machine that perfectly suits our needs. Mr. Bräutigam from Louis Scheuch, in particular, was highly committed throughout the entire process, and the SENNEBOGEN contacts were always readily available.”

“We usually operate the SENNEBOGEN 6100 E at a low speed, so fuel consumption is pleasingly low . The machine also has sufficient power for our purposes,” Franke says happily.

Cable excavator project: A complete success

The cable excavator project has been a complete success: from the initial contact with Louis Scheuch, through the provision of a rental machine, to its final on-site deployment. The machine operators, Yury Starodub and Alexander Tschernischow, also gave entirely positive feedback. They are proud that they mastered the complex application so quickly.
