Cranes are replaced by material handling excavators

Albert Bergschneider, a long-established logistics company specializing in building materials, is investing in modern handling technology: A new electric-powered SENNEBOGEN 870 E with a rail gantry has been put into operation at the Ibbenbüren-Uffeln port site. The powerful material handler replaces two older systems – a cable gantry crane and another crane system – and will now handle central bulk material handling between barges and freight trains.

Specialist for trimodal logistics

The family-run company looks back on over 125 years of experience in logistics and building materials trading and is now one of the regional specialists for trimodal logistics between ship, rail and truck.

From its five inland ports on the Mittelland and Dortmund-Ems Canals, the company supplies building materials dealers and manufacturing companies in northwest Germany. Two of the locations have direct rail connections, enabling efficient transport by rail.

New machine replaces two older crane systems

At the Ibbenbüren-Uffeln site, directly on the Mittelland Canal, Germany’s longest artificial waterway, the new machine was installed on a 340-meter-long quay with an adjacent warehouse and rail connection. The SENNEBOGEN 870 E, mounted on a rail gantry, handles the loading of bulk materials between barges and freight trains and is gradually replacing two older crane systems. Bergschneider was supported in the new acquisition by SENNEBOGEN service and sales partner Schlüter Baumaschinen.

Shortened turnaround times and reduced operating costs

In Ibbenbüren-Uffeln, the SENNEBOGEN 870 E combines a reach of 25 meters, a lifting capacity of up to 25 tons , and faster turning and swiveling movements of the machine – which significantly shortens ship handling . “We were able to reduce the time required to unload a ship from five and a half hours to two and a half hours,” emphasizes Co-Managing Director Silva Haselon. The powerful 250 kW electric motor operates locally emission-free and virtually silently. The material handler is powered by an integrated cable drum – this ensures the machine’s flexible movement along the entire length of the 340-meter-long quay.

In addition, the SENNEBOGEN Green Hybrid energy recovery system reduces operating costs by up to 30% compared to a conventional material handler. By using this innovative technology, Bergschneider avoids approximately 6.5 tons of CO2 emissions per year at the site.

Efficient and sustainable port logistics

The spacious operator’s cab with hydraulic height adjustment allows for a flexible working height of 8 to 12 meters. Thanks to the elevated cab position and additional camera support, the operator has an optimal view of his work environment.

With the new SENNEBOGEN 870 E, Bergschneider is investing in a high-performance and environmentally friendly handling solution: Two older systems were replaced, handling times and operating costs were reduced, and CO2 emissions were lowered – an important step towards high-performance and sustainable port logistics.
