Going Downhill Isn’t So Bad

Typically, when things go downhill, it is a bad thing. But when it comes to conveying bulk materials, it can actually be a good thing.

Downhill conveyors are the most efficient equipment at mines and plants when able to take advantage of a downhill landscape. Downhill conveyors can create power by virtue of the downhill force of the bulk material load.

With Sandwich Belt high angle conveyors, we have found that not only can they be an energy source, but they can possibly facilitate energy storage.

An overland conveyor system designed by DSI was able to regenerate power back into the mine’s power grid. This was done by taking advantage of a downhill slope and gravity pull on the bulk material.

This month’s newsletter highlights how going downhill has been advantageous and is a good consideration for your bulk materials handling needs.

The mine originally contracted DSI for a Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor which saved space and created a direct haulage path over the mountain. It also offered free energy – 220 kW – into the mine grid when operating at the design rate. The Sandwich Belt order was cancelled due to geology concerns, so DSI instead developed a net regenerative overland conveyor system that exploited horizontal curves to reduce the number of conveyors flights saving the client money.

DOWNHILL POWER PRODUCTION

Venezuelan chemical giant, Pequiven developed a phosphate mine in the mountains with a six-flight overland conveyor system to transport the product to their port facilities. The overland system was to be 2.76 kilometers wrong with an elevation drop of 437 meters. They system ran from the mine’s phosphate storage barn to the port.

The concept for the DSI Mega Battery was inspired because of the proven capability to generate power with a downhill Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor. Utilizing two, parallel Sandwich Belt conveyors, during times of low power demand, the Sandwich Belt conveyor would elevate heavy steel balls to a higher potential energy state. During high power demand, a lowering unit lowers the heavy steel balls back to grade, generating power back to the grid.
