Sydney (Australia), July 2018 – The Australian port solution provider Qube Ports will shortly receive its eighth mobile harbour crane from Liebherr. Now they also placed an order for their ninth LHM.

Qube, the giant Australian logistics supplier with services and facilities in 28 Australian ports, have ordered a LHM 550 for its operations in Whyalla with SIMEC. This will be the ninth mobile harbour crane Qube have ordered from Liebherr in the last five years, with an LHM 420 also currently on its way to Bell Bay in Tasmania.

The new machine type LHM 550 has a maximum lifting capacity of up to 144 tonnes and a maximum radius of 54 meters. Furthermore, the new crane comes with an SMAG 4-rope grab and the SmartGrip® bulk handling option, allowing materials with a variety of densities to be handled with the same grab. The SmartGrip® technology is capable of optimising the filling rate of the grab in a self-learning manner. In this way, SmartGrip® learns after just five lifting cycles how to optimise capacity utilisation of the grab even for less experienced crane operators. It prevents overloads, increases the material handling rate and, at the same time, alleviates crane operator stress.

“This saves Qube a lot of hassle with grab changes, but also saves them money otherwise spent buying multiple grabs,” comments Gordon Clark, General Manager of Liebherr Australia. “It’s another exiting investment and a demonstration of Qube’s commitment to SIMEC and the port of Whyalla. This investment will assist SIMEC with its continued development of the Whyalla Port towards becoming a world-scale, multi-user facility” said Todd Emmert, Director of Qube in WA. “Liebherr has worked very hard to shorten our delivery to suit our client’s needs.” Qube also have 100% ownership of AAT and 50% ownership of NSS Townsville, between them accounting for four more Liebherr machines.

PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies, Salzgitter, Germany, introduces high volume radio controlled single-rope grab (EGF 60) for the operation with a container crane at Port of Aarhus, the largest container port in Denmark.

At the beginning of 2015 PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies GmbH (PSLT) was approached by its customer Port of Aarhus with a request for a specific grab that can be operated with an existing container crane for the handling of bulk cargo. As most of the proven grabs could not be used to fulfill this requirement the company felt encouraged to develop an efficient solution tailored for customer’s needs. This was a challenging technical task: Since the crane is not equipped with the necessary hoisting gear/winches, mechanical two-rope and four-rope grabs are ineligible for operation with this type of crane. Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic motor grabs require a wide range of accessories to be installed on the crane and would go beyond the planned budget, hence also these grabs could not be taken into account. Another alternative is the use of Diesel grabs, however they are known to have a negative impact on the industrial safety and besides they provide limited operational flexibility. For the required handling capacity of more than 30 m³ the grab must have a powerful engine as well as an exhaust system to meet the permissible emission levels.

Finally, after all possibilities had been checked, PSLT decided for the only workable solution: The PEINER radio controlled single-rope grab (EGF) has already proved to be successful on board of bulk carriers over the past 15 years, however the grabs were primarily used for handling volumes from 12 to 15 m³. The goal of the Aarhus project was to construct an EGF with a volume of 32 m³ in order to use the existing crane lifting capacity even during grab operation. These specific grabs for the handling of animal feed, wood pellets and wood chips at the port of Aarhus are the largest radio controlled single-rope grabs ever built by PSLT.
In addition to a new design engineering of the basic unit with special cylinders the grabs offer a sensor attachment transmitting actual operational states to the crane crane controls and crane driver by wireless communication. This innovative feature helps crane operators to work even faster and more effective. The grabs are provided with a centralized shift of lubricating points and therefore easy to maintain.

An intelligent climbing assistance system ensures the highest standards of job safety for the maintenance staff on the job site. The grabs are assembled with a universal suspension that enables the operation both lengthways and crosswise. Our scope of supply also includes an adapter unit in the form of special load traverses to connect the grab with the crane headblock. The traverses feature a range of supplementary technics, e.g. proximity sensor, light and camera systems, control cabinets and electrical plugs.

Additionally, the EGF 60 is equipped with a unique locking system that considerably reduces the grab height. This feature particularly supports ship to ship bulk handling processes, for example during transportation of wheel loaders into the ship’s hold, where high structures on deck are often blocking the way. The grab shell can easily be fixed in position by hand without using any tools so that the grab height is reduced by half.

It is the first time that a PEINER radio controlled single-rope grab of such a large size will be operated at a container crane. We expect this pilot project to serve as a positive drive for further developments in this field and sincerely hope that it could be a starting point for the realization of more projects with this innovative technology. Jens Hvidegaard Dissing, Project Manager at Port of Aarhus, who accompanied the project from the idea stage to the first commissioning, is convinced about the new development. “Bulk Material Handling is essential to the success of ports. Our goal was to have an intelligent solution for our container cranes, with significant better efficiency in terms of speed and handling volume. We had an idea, and we found the right product: a PEINER radio controlled single-rope grab, that combines all the required features, together with additional benefits to meet today’s material handling challenges in the port of Aarhus.

The technical and economical growth potential of reneable energy for the production of power, heat and fuels is substantial, with biomass covering over 10% of the world’s energy demand. The transshipment of biomass volume in ports and terminals, waste-to-energy plants, timber mills and co-generation plants is ever increasing. Apart from agricultural goods such as corn, sugar cane, canola and other food crops, biomass products such as timber, bark, saw mill waste, wood chips and pellets are handled. In addition, organic waste from household rubbish and residual products from the food industry also play an important role in the handling of biomass.

With its wide range of applications, PEINER grabs can handle all kinds of biomass materials, with certain grabs tailored towards the special needs and requirements of particular industries. In the timber handling industries the use of hydraulic and electro-hydraulic timber grabs are primarily common place, with operators benefit from their high-load capacity, high closing force and special shaped tongs for the handling of timber logs. These key features enable the grab to handle logs in any variety, whether round timber, bundled and even single logs safely and efficiently.

When handling bulk materials such as wood chips and wood pellets, crop or organic waste, motor grabs or four-rope grabs are generally used. Due to their technical features PEINER motor grabs offer numerous advantages, especially for their use in incinerator plants. The PEINER MMG/MMGL series of motor “orange peel” grabs are already successfully established within the incineration market. Its specially designed construction allows for fast operation and is highly energy efficient. The optimal installation height, low centre of gravity and robust design ensures the flexible use of the MMG/MMGL series. Thanks to individually driven shell segments, the motor “orange peel” grab adapts to suit the materials being handled. The shell segment design and the number of shell segments on the grab can easily be adapted to meet customer requirements. Hydraulic pipes, wiring and connections as well as the cylinder barrel and piston rod are fully protected from external elements.

Depending on the field of application, PEINER SMAG offer customers the option of mechanically operated rope crabs which are available in clamshell or orange peel grab design. Both types are considered solid and reliable. The balance ratio between the dead weight and grab volume or crane capacity respectively; provides a good level of penetration into the bulk material supporting higher throughput rates.

PEINER Motor Dual Scoop Grab, Type MTGL-3, working in an ash bunker

PEINER Motor Orange Peel Grab, Type MMGL-4, handling domestic waste

Conclusion:

PEINER SMAG discerns a positive trend in the handling of biomass and continues to expand its efforts in providing high quality reliable grabs in this market, particularly in the waste incineration industry. An existing framework agreement with a major client for the delivery of motor grabs to operate in the incineration plant has been highly successful with incoming waste and the bi-product of ashes handled by the MMGL/MMTGL series PEINER motor “orange peel” grabs. From PEINER’s excellent track record and successful implementation of biomass grabs, further orders from this market segment are expected.
