Bruks Siwertell has secured repeat business from US company Martin Operating Partnership, in Beaumont, Texas, in the form of a new ship loader capable of safely and reliably handling sulfur prill at high capacities.

“This trusted position, our proven technological capabilities and our commitment to deliver the loader within the space of nine months were all factors that secured the contract,” he adds.

The new rail-travelling loader is ideal for terminals where space is at a premium, as it is capable of filling every hold on a ship without requiring the vessel to move along its berth. It will be used for loading prilled sulfur into ship holds at a rated capacity of up to 1,200t/h.

Martin Operating Partnership, owned by Martin Midstream Partnership, handles various sulfur cargoes. The prilled sulfur, often used for agricultural applications, can be stored and loaded in open air; however, minimizing sulfur dust emissions was a key concern for the company.

The fully-enclosed ship loader’s conveyors, as well as its dust suppression systems, ensures environmental protection.

“At Bruks Siwertell, we handle sulfur under many conditions and in different climates,” Mr Upchurch notes. “While we obviously build to order, the foundation of our robust, reliable designs is their ability to withstand demanding operating conditions and also to handle cargoes without damage and spillage.”

The new machine is scheduled for delivery as early as January 2020 and will support the company’s expanding sulfur services in the US Gulf Coast region.

Bruks Siwertell has signed a contract with Ashdod Port Company Ltd for the delivery of a Siwertell ST 490-M screw-type ship unloader destined to serve Israel’s largest sea port. A fundamental requirement of the port was environmental protection; the totally-enclosed Siwertell unloader was the only system that could meet the standard and also offer safe, high-capacity through-ship performance.

“Ashdod Port Company chose Siwertell technology to secure its substantial and growing dry bulk cargo volumes for a number of reasons,” explains Bertil Andersson, Siwertell Sales Manager. “Most significantly, our Siwertell unloaders are the only proven solution for safe, enclosed and continuous sulfur unloading. They also meet the port’s strict environmental requirements, handling materials without dust or spillage.”

Ashdod is Israel’s largest sea port in terms of cargo volumes and is a major gateway for the State of Israel. The new Siwertell ship unloader has been ordered as part of the port’s major expansion plans. It will be rail-mounted and used to discharge sulfur and pet coke at continuous rated capacities of 600t/h and 500t/h respectively from vessels up to 60 000 dwt.

Although a valuable and widely used commodity, sulfur is highly toxic, volatile and corrosive. For these reasons, it is now environmentally unacceptable for it to be spilled during unloading. However, its containment increases the likelihood of ‘hot spots’ creating the potential to explode and cause fires.

“We know how to deal with these dangers,” notes Mr Andersson. “Our sulfur-handling ship unloaders have been supplied to the market for over 30 years. All these units are fitted with the Siwertell Sulfur Safety System (4S), which detects and extinguishes fires early, shutting down the system to stop their spread, and safely containing them before they can become a full-blown blaze. To contain explosions, steel casings are reinforced and explosion-venting valves are fitted along the conveyors to relieve pressure.”

Ashdod’s bulk terminal operates 24 hours a day and the new ship unloader is destined to serve this facility. It will be built and transported fully-assembled via heavy-lift vessel for installation at the port. Delivery is scheduled for April 2021.

Siwertell, part of Bruks Siwertell Group, has secured an order from US-based GCCM Holdings LCC to supply a high-capacity ship unloader for South Texas Cement’s terminal in the US port of Corpus Christi.

The Siwertell ST 640-M unit will have a continuous rated cement-handling capacity of 1,500t/h and will be able to unload ships of up to 60,000 dwt.

“GCCM and South Texas Cement made the decision that their new terminal would be best served by a mechanical unloader,” says Patrik Henryson, Sales Manager, Siwertell. “The factors considered by the companies during the decision process included unloading times, venting requirements, electrical demand, capital and lifetime maintenance costs, ship size, and storage capacity.”

“Siwertell’s demonstrated ability was a large factor in the decision to choose them for this project,” says Earl Ingram, President of GCCM Holdings and South Texas Cement. “Machine size and unloading rate were extremely important. This particular machine is well within the operational range of many other machines that Siwertell currently has in service, and when combining all of the deciding factors that led to choosing a mechanical unloader, it was apparent that Siwertell was the best fit for our needs.

“We especially like the high rate of unloading combined with the versatility to handle various ship sizes.”

The unloader is currently being built and will be delivered fully-assembled by heavy-lift ship to the port. Siwertell will supervise its commissioning and the unit is expected into operation in June-August 2019.

Siwertell, part of Bruks Siwertell Group, has secured an order for a ship loading system from Irish mining company, Boliden Tara Mines DAC; an operating subsidiary of Boliden AB. The specially-designed system will serve the company’s new terminal located in Dublin Port’s Alexandra Basin, ensuring close to zero dust emissions for the operator. The order was booked into Bruks Siwertell Group’s second quarter order intake.

“Boliden required a flexible system capable of handling a variety of cargoes and a wide range of vessel sizes, but with a very strict approach to dust emissions,” explains Peter Göransson, Sales Manager and Senior Advisor, Siwertell. “Our lengthy experience and expertise in bulk material loading was a significant factor in winning this contract, including the fact that no efforts were spared in designing a triple-enclosed loading system that will ensure as close to zero emissions as technologically possible for the operator.

“A high loading capacity, combined with easy system operation and low service and maintenance costs, were also significant factors in Boliden’s decision to invest in Siwertell’s market-leading technology. Additionally, it complies with best available technology (BAT) and reference document (BREF) regulations,” adds Mr Göransson.

The new system comprises a triple-enclosed belt-type ship loader, with luffing and slewing capabilities, a reversible shuttle-belt conveyor with dual remotely-operated connection points, as well as a triple-enclosed jetty and overland conveyor.

It will handle zinc and lead concentrates, which are transferred from rail wagons to a receiving storage building. From here, a conveyor belt leads to a new quayside facility  in Alexandra Basin. Siwertell designs are well-suited for sticky and hard-to-handle materials and the new system will be capable of loading ships of up to 10,000 dwt at a continuous rated capacity of 600t/h.

“Based on Siwertell designs, and with production and construction supervision as a part of the delivery scope, Siwertell, together with local partners, will have full control of the project from design to handover,” continues Mr Göransson. “With carefully-selected components from Swedish and other European sub-contractors, we will deliver an efficient, reliable, high-performance system with low operational and maintenance costs.”

The steel structures for the ship loader will be produced in Far East and equipment will be mainly supplied from Sweden. The overland and jetty conveyor will be produced locally in Ireland with the conveyor equipment supplied from Europe. The system will be erected and commissioned at Dublin Port in partnership with an expert Irish company and is expected to be fully operational by August 2019.

Siwertell, part of Bruks Siwertell Group, has secured an order from Mexico’s Gramosa Agroalimentos SA for a high-capacity unloader to serve the company’s new agri-bulk terminal located in the Gulf of Mexico port, Veracruz. The unloader was chosen after out-performing all competitor systems during a four-month selection process.

The totally-enclosed, rail-mounted, Siwertell ST 640-M unloader offers a rated capacity of 1,200t/h and will handle grain, corn, soya bean meal and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS).

In a statement from Gramosa Agroalimentos, the company said that: “The Siwertell system was selected after considering many factors and multiple equipment comparisons. Analysis included operating principles and mechanisms, investment costs, as well as operating costs.

“An important factor was cargo loss and damage. We will handle a number of different grains at the new terminal such as corn, rice, wheat, soya beans and canola seeds. The low conveying speed of the Siwertell screw-type unloader means that the grain is not damaged during handling, which will give us added value and differentiate us from our competition.

“Although the selection analysis took four months, it was actually an extremely quick process,” says Patrik Henryson, Siwertell Sales Manager. “Our first meeting with the customer, via a local contact, was in November and the unloader was ordered by February this year. I think this speaks volumes about the performance of our equipment and the service that we offer as company.”

The new unloader will be delivered fully-assembled from China and will then be tested and commissioned on site in Veracruz by Siwertell. It is expected to be operational in mid-2019.

Cargotec has signed an agreement with JCE Invest AB to establish a joint venture, Bruks Siwertell Group, specialised in dry bulk handling. The new joint venture will own Siwertell AB (previously part of Kalmar Business Area within Cargotec) and BRUKS Holding AB (previously part of JCE Group). Both companies are world-leading suppliers of bulk materials handling solutions. Cargotec will own 48% of the shares in Bruks Siwertell Group, and JCE Invest AB will own the rest, 52%. The ownerships are included to venturers’ consolidated financial statements in accordance with the applicable regulation. The transaction has been signed and closed on 9 May 2018.

“This joint venture supports Cargotec’s strategy to focus on container ports, heavy industrial segment and logistics. Siwertell’s business is outside these core focus areas, with different customers, customer locations and limited synergies with the rest of our businesses. By joining forces with JCE Group, we are able to create a company that will be a significant player in the bulk material handling with a globally competitive and specialised product portfolio,” says Antti Kaunonen, President, Kalmar.

“This is a true partnership between two strong brands, Siwertell and BRUKS, as they complement each other very well both in terms of product portfolio and market coverage.
