Typically slated to recognize the maritime industry’s role in job creation and economic prosperity, this year’s event will focus on the role of ports in the current COVID-19 global pandemic response and recovery. The 2020 event recognizes the dedication, sacrifice and professionalism of the port industry workforce in their collective efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus while ensuring a steady flow of vital goods and services. In the U.S., more than 652,000 maritime-industry professionals work every day to ensure that cargo and cruise and ferry travelers move efficiently through the nation’s ports. By passenger and crew screenings, vessel quarantines and other measures, seaports are committed to ‘flattening the curve,’ both domestically and among our critical trading partners around the world.
On April 5th, seaports of the Americas will commemorate Western Hemisphere Ports Day for the fifth consecutive year.

Led by the American Association of Port Authorities –and united in our common goal of keeping the supply chain up and running throughout the hemisphere– the Port of South Louisiana is proud to join hundreds of ports in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, to highlight the value of seaports.

Like ports worldwide, we have an ongoing commitment to remind our community and its leaders about the important role we play in the River Region and as a vital link to the global economy.

The importance of ports in our region is well documented. According to IHS Markit’s GTA Forecasting, combined international sea trade moving through Western Hemisphere seaports in 2018 totaled nearly 4.2 billion metric tons in volume and US$3.7 trillion in value. Seaports in Central and South America handled 1.86 billion metric tons of cargo valued at US$1.17 trillion, while North American seaports handled 2.34 billion metric tons of goods, valued at US$2.53 trillion. Regionally, the Port of South Louisiana handled 274.9 million metric tons (303.1 million short tons) valued at over US$69 billion.

However, the economic worth of all this cargo in terms of jobs and business activity is much greater than its market value. According to Martin Associates of Lancaster, Pa., in the U.S. alone, port activity generates 31 million American jobs and accounts for over one quarter of the nation’s economy. Locally, 30,180 jobs in the River Region is related to the Port of South Louisiana; that is 1 out of 25 jobs in the state of Louisiana.

Ports also play a critical role in providing goods that impact our everyday lives. Millions of tons of food, clothing, medicine, fuel and building materials, as well as consumer electronics and toys, valued at more than US$10 billion, move through Western Hemisphere seaports every day.

As families, businesses, and communities begin to recover from the pandemic we’re all facing, AAPA-member ports are ready to deliver the products you need and want, keep your shopping cart filled, and take whatever actions are needed to support a strong and stable economy.

So, please take a moment to consider the role ports play in your life, your community and the economy, then use the hashtags #SeaportsDeliver and #SeaportsUnited to post your thoughts about ports on social media.

Forth Ports owns and manages eight commercial ports across the UK including the Port of Rosyth which is strategically located for road and rail and provides an important connection with mainland Europe and the UK. The Port of Rosyth is currently in an exciting phase of development with a multimillion pound investment to provide a dedicated
agri-bulk facility for Cefetra. The new terminal and improved storage facilities will deliver increased annual throughput and storage capacity positioning Rosyth as the main agri-hub for Scotland.

In developing this new agri-hub the safety of staff and protection of the environment is paramount. Forth Ports chose a SAMSON Eco Hopper to receive dry bulk materials as it offers a high and reliable import capacity whilst minimising the escape of dust and it is equipped with a host of safety measures to ensure effective and safe performance.

The new SAMSON Eco Hopper arrived at the Port of Rosyth earlier this month and it will now be installed and commissioned to receive dry bulk materials such as grain and aggregates.

“We are very pleased and excited to be working with such an important and respected Port Operator as Forth Ports and to provide one of our ecological hoppers for their new
agri-bulk terminal project at Rosyth” says Dale Lockley, Managing Director of SAMSON Materials Handling. “The Forth Ports Group has considerable experience with the SAMSON range of equipment as there is already SAMSON ship loading and stockpiling equipment operating at their other ports, but this is the first Eco Hopper at Forth Ports, indeed the first SAMSON Eco Hopper in the UK”

Commenting on the hopper in Rosyth, Derek Knox, Senior Port Manager said: “It’s great to welcome the new SAMSON eco hopper into Rosyth. We are investing in our port to ensure the most efficient, dust free agri-hub for Cefetra as well as other bulk customers. We look forward to using the hopper on the next grain shipment due into the port in September. We have a strong relationship with SAMSON and have had a great experience with their market leading equipment.”

Operation of the SAMSON Eco Hopper is straightforward. As dry bulk materials such as grain arrive by sea they are offloaded into the hoppers using mobile harbour cranes. At a little over 18m in height and made of reinforced steel the Eco Hopper provides a sturdy and solid reception unit. The Eco Hopper is topped by a tapered inlet shroud which minimises any dust generation caused by cross winds. As the crane grab discharges the load, dust filter units situated on three sides of the hopper will keep any fugitive dust from spreading. The grain then falls through the “Flex-Flap” dust seal system which contains any further dust. Material is discharged from the hopper via a dual outlet fitted with two telescopic cascade discharge chutes. This allows a single truck to be loaded by two chutes simultaneously thus increasing the average loading speed. Material passes through the SAMSON Eco Hopper at a peak rate of 1200 tph. The unit is wheel mounted which allows it to be positioned across the port in different locations as required and to be moved clear to allow other port operations to continue when not in use.

The SAMSON Eco Hopper benefits from a variety of safety measures: a storm anchor system (comprising of chains, shackles and attachments to secure the equipment during high winds), ready-to-load traffic lights and sounders, working lighting and safety overload protection. The operators’ cabin is climate controlled and provides a 360 degree view of the operation while accessing all controls. There is also a hand-held pendant operator remote control unit.

Forth Ports Rosyth is the first UK port to install a SAMSON Eco Hopper to provide dust controlled import facilities for its new agri-hub.

Nicholls State University’s Coastal Restoration Program is dedicated to reversing that prognosis by providing storm surge protection and restoring Louisiana land. The Port of South Louisiana is, once again, committed in assisting Nicholls with its coastal restoration efforts.

Nicholls State University and the Port of South Louisiana announced a partnership to aid the study of coastal restoration.

Nicholls biology students and faculty have spearheaded coastal restoration efforts through the Farm. They have grown, harvested, and planted over 30,000 plants in coastal habitats in recent years. “This gives us a lot of flexibility to do what we need and be able to respond to the needs of the community,” said Dr. Allyse Ferrara, Jerry Ledet Endowed Professor of Environmental Biology. “We greatly appreciate the support from the Port of South Louisiana.”

As America’s largest tonnage Port district, the Port of South Louisiana is the premier sea gateway for U.S. export and import traffic. Headquartered in LaPlace, the Port stretches 54 miles along the Mississippi River. The stretch of river accounts for 53 industries and 30,000 jobs.

“If we don’t do this, we will lose our coast. We will lose Thibodaux. We will lose Louisiana,” Aucoin said. “We are not in the business of coastal restoration. So we help by contributing to programs like Nicholls State University that are.”

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 25, 2019) – Unprecedented tonnage increases from cargoes moving through the state of Indiana’s three-port system made 2018 the best year in the organization’s history. The Ports of Indiana, which includes the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor, the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville and the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon, handled 14.8 million tons of cargo last year, a 25% increase over 2017 and a 21% increase over its previous record year in 2015. This was the first time the Ports of Indiana set records in each quarter, and the fifth consecutive year that the Ports of Indiana handled more than 10 million tons of cargo. Coda II, CEO of the Ports of Indiana. “Each of our ports builds and maintains exceptional infrastructure to allow our world-class port businesses to leverage what Indiana does exceedingly well – manufacture the products essential for modern life and move food products for the world. Our essential multimodal connections provide companies access to water, rail and road, and provide critical avenues for businesses to meet market demands and remain globally competitive.”

The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor and the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville collectively shipped more than two million tons of steel, which is each port’s largest commodity. The Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon, which has been breaking volume records for the past four years, handled 61% more coal this year than it did it 2017, and experienced increased shipments in ethanol, soy products and dried distillers grain.

This comes as the Ports of Indiana bolstered investments in its existing infrastructure at all three ports, pursued expansion through federal grants at its facilities in Burns Harbor and Jeffersonville and began the process to replace an overhead crane at the transit shed at Mount Vernon.

A vision for inland waterway transport (IWT) in the Baltic Sea Region as well as means to strengthen inland shipping were highlighted in Brussels this week, when about 90 participants from around the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) gathered to discuss the future of inland waterway transport to the final conference of project EMMA. The three-year-long project has brought inland shipping and inland waterways such as Elbe, Oder or Vistula higher on the political agenda. Project EMMA, an Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme project aimed at enhancing inland navigation in the Baltic Sea Region, organized its final conference “Visions and Opportunities for the Transport Network – Inland Navigation and River-Sea Shipping in the Baltic Sea Region” in Brussels jointly with the Chambers’ Union Elbe/Oder. At the conference, a vision for IWT in the Baltic Sea Region was presented. According to the vision, inland waterway transport is a green and smart transport mode, which is well integrated in multimodal supply chains with a remarkable share of the modal split. Inland waterway transport represents currently 6 % of the total transport volume in the European Union, consisting mostly of the transport along the Rhein and the Danube. However, during the three years, project....

However, during the three years, project EMMA has promoted sustainable inland shipping across the Baltic Sea Region successfully, highlighting the potential of many BSR countries to contribute to a more sustainable transport system by enhancing inland navigation and increasing its modal share in the transport system. The project EMMA was approved as a flagship project in the Policy Area Transport of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, reflecting the importance of developing inland navigation in the Baltic Sea Region.

“A lot of countries that want to push this transport mode further take this momentum. Project EMMA draws attention to these countries because there is potential which needs to be lifted by closer co-operation of all stakeholders involved”, said Stefan Breitenbach from the Port of Hamburg Marketing.

According to the vision, IWT is well-considered in strategic transport network planning and legislation. The expert panels discussed the importance of extending the TEN-T inland waterway network and including more waterways in core network corridors. Integration of waterways into the TEN-T network advances investments on them, since a lot of financing is directed to core network corridors. National regulatory frameworks are clearly a challenge and there is a need for harmonised national rules and regulations. For instance, in Sweden inland navigation is heavily affected by pilot and fairway dues that decrease its competitiveness. Johan Lantz, CEO of Avatar Logistics, called for a same playground for the whole Europe and stressed that the price of pilotage is currently a deal-breaker in Sweden when it comes to inland navigation.

The vision stated that a clear Intelligent Transport Systems’ (ITS) strategy enables smart shipping solutions. Arne Gehlhaar from the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics reminded that digitalization is needed to reach the competitiveness of inland navigation. River Information Services (RIS) are services designed to enhance safety and efficiency of inland waterway transport by optimizing traffic and transport processes. In Germany, EMMA pilot focused on improving transport management with the development of a digital map that combines RIS data with traffic flow relevant information, helping to achieve more efficient IWT in the Baltic Sea Region.

On long distances, shipping is the most environmentally friendly way of transporting goods when carbon dioxide emissions between different modes of transport are compared. According to the vision, an alternative fuel network is in operation serving a modern, smart and green IWT fleet. Several speakers stressed promotion of alternative fuels as one way to get closer to zero emissions.

According to the vision, transition points between different waterway classes and interlinks are established. Finally, the vision emphasized a strengthened voice of the sector. Therefore, stronger cooperation of stakeholders is needed.

“Inland shipping will not become an alternative for long-haul transport without a strong voice and active sector asking for further legislative and regulatory improvements. Much more input is needed from the sector by its associations involved in the sector. This means strengthening of lobby networks by active memberships in national and European associations and organizations. Dominant transport modes, namely transport by rails and roads, are of course still needed, and road transport especially for the last-mile”, Stefan Breitenbach said, “but IWT still do not play the adequate role in the transport system to its potential. IWT supports sustainable transport aims and also as such should be better promoted!”

A highlight of the conference was the hand-over of the EMMA policy paper “Strengthening Inland Waterway Transport in Europe and the Baltic Sea Region” by the EMMA lead partner, Port of Hamburg Marketing, together with the European IWT associations that co-authored and support the paper. The policy paper emphasizes a need for a clear strategy to lift IWT potentials in the Baltic Sea Region and brings forward means to strengthen inland navigation and river-sea shipping in Europe and especially in the Baltic Sea Region, providing input to future discussions. The policy paper as well as the event documentation is available online: www.project-emma.eu.

The final conference was jointly organised with the Chamber Union Elbe/Oder, which combines 34 regional chambers of commerce along the central European inland waterway network of rivers Elbe and Oder from German, Poland and Czech Republic.

Initiative to boost EXIM trade and increase the volume of containers handled at the port

Mumbai, June 18, 2018: Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited (KPCL), the country’s largest all-weather; deep water port, on the east-coast of India, in an industry first initiative, announced the installation of ‘Rapiscan Eagle P 60 (“Eagle P60’)’ a drive through X Ray Container Scanner & Radiation Portal Monitors. Besides increasing security and safety of the port, the container scanner will radically enhance the terminal’s overall performance whilst reducing the service time.

Offering seamless movement of containers, the drive through container scanner at Krishnapatnam Port will enable it to increase the volume of handling import containers by at least 5000 TEUs per month. With this new development the port is expecting rise in transshipment cargo. Further, it will increase the frequency and connectivity of vessels, thus reducing the dwell time, transaction costs while ensuring timely delivery. Overall the new container scanner will give a boost to the volume of containers handled at Krishnapatnam Port.

Krishnapatnam Port is the first & the only Seaport in India to procure and install the Drive through container scanner at its port. Rs.10-crore facility was inaugurated by Dr. John Joseph, Director General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence, in the presence of GST Chief Commissioner Y.S. Shahrawat (Visakhapatnam zone), port Chief Executive Officer Anil Yendluri and others.

Technology is a crucial driver of the shipping, logistics and trade industry. The newly introduced self-sealing of export containers by exporters themselves with RFID sealed and direct entry of these sealed containers will encourage more exporters. Whereas, the recent permissions for the import of metal scrap which requires setup of container scanner as well as import of apples, will boost container volumes through the port.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Anil Yendluri, CEO Krishnapatnam Port Container Ltd. said, “Krishnapatnam has been at the forefront embracing technological advancements and integrating the most modern port solutions. The installation of the container scanner is a step forward to our ongoing commitment to offer the best in class and most competitive service offerings to our clients.”

“We will continue to invest in cutting-edge technological innovations that not only bring immense benefits to the port operations and the trade community but also play a crucial role in contributing to the country’s economy.” he added.

This will increase the speed of inspection; reduce the manual work at the terminal and enhance the efficiency of the entire logistic chain. The move will thus benefit Indian exporters who otherwise suffer losses when non-scanned containers are shipped back and will encourage increased transshipment activities.

Besides backing direct port entry of export containers, the new scanner will help in Direct Port Delivery of import containers thus radically trimming down the congestion at the Container Terminal and the Container Freight Station

The port recently announced rise of record 88% in its container handling capacity and 25% in total cargo handling for FY18. The port plans to become a key transhipment hub on the east coast of India.

About Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd

Since the beginning of the year the Port of Hamburg has offered an optimized service portfolio for handling ultra-heavy loads. With an unit load capacity of 600 tons, ‘Enak’ is the most powerful salvage/floating crane in Germany. This heavyweight was formerly stationed in Bremerhaven. The new owner Lührs Schifffahrt, who acquired ‘Enak’ from Bugsier Reederei, has transferred the floating crane to Hamburg. As a universal port, Hamburg offers a wide range of waterside cargo handling services. Along with containers and bulk cargoes, these naturally also cover conventional general cargoes. With a volume of 1.4 million tons, these may constitute no more than 1.5 percent of total throughput, but their depth of added value and impact on jobs make them an important element in the Port of Hamburg’s cargo mix. Several specialist multi-purpose handling facilities, including Wallmann & Co., C. Steinweg (Süd-West Terminal), Rhenus Midgard and Unikai Lagerei- und Speditionsgesellschaft are well equipped to handle project shipments, heavy and out-of-gauge cargoes. Ultra-heavy general cargoes are usually handled with the aid of ship’s own lifting gear or quayside crane capacities to a maximum of 400 tons. In Hamburg the two floating cranes HHLA III (100 tons) and HHLA IV (200 tons), which....

In Hamburg the two floating cranes HHLA III (100 tons) and HHLA IV (200 tons), which can lift up to 300 tons when working in tandem, are also available. The ‘Enak’ with its capacity of up to 600 tons now represents an even more powerful option.

The new arrival has already been a frequent guest in Hamburg when especially heavy cargoes had to be loaded. Yet its former base at Bremerhaven involved great effort in bringing the giant to the Elbe, so that again and again cargo has been routed past Hamburg and via other ports. “Stationing ‘Enak’ in Hamburg gives shippers, project forwarders and heavy-lift shipping companies fresh opportunities to exploit the Port of Hamburg’s strengths as a project shipment transhipment hub,” said Axel Mattern, Joint CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.

Technology giant Siemens is one example. When power supply equipment needs to be loaded, Hamburg with its specialized cargo-handling facilities is the most important port in the North Range for the group. Gas turbines from Berlin and transformers from Nuremberg are two examples. Such large transformers have a unit weight of 550 tons. It was impossible to shift them here with Hamburg’s crane capacities as they stood. ‘Enak’ now provides an option for shipping such mammoth transformers and other ultra-heavy cargoes via Hamburg.

Built in 1967, technically upgraded in 1993 and now classified by DNV GL, the crane is 55 metres long and 25 metres wide. It operates under the German flag and in Hamburg occupies a berth in Ellerholz docks. Recently this powerpack was deployed on a spectacular rescue: After a pedestrian bridge to the musical theatre showing ‘The Lion King’ collapsed into the River Elbe in March, ‘Enak’ raised it and spirited it away for repairs.
