Although global economic growth has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic, PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies GmbH (PSLT) benefited from a more or less undiminished demand for grabs on the market.

One of the biggest challenges were orders for a total of 24 scissor grabs with a volume of up to 35 m². These massive grabs, also known as ‚Lobster‘, were produced in just a few weeks at the main Salzgitter plant and are used for various handling tasks at different destinations. Due to their enormous dimensions, the grabs had to be transported to the loading site at night on special heavy-duty trucks. The vast majority of this grab series are now operating in steel mills in Taiwan and Lybia handling coal and iron ore. Further scissor grabs handling iron ore pellets were shipped to a company in Abu Dhabi who offers quayside services to all vessels that call at the Emirate’s seaports. Others are intended for the handling of coal on barges at their operation site in Sachalin, Russia’s largest island.

PEINER scissor grabs are ideal for fast and efficient ship unloading as they handle high volumes per loading operation. They can be used on all four-rope cranes and are generally suitable for all bulk materials. In contrast to classical dual scoop grabs, they work faster and have a greater trimming effect. The scissor grabs have a significantly lower center of gravity, which reduces the danger of tipping over. Furthermore, the closing forces increase during the course of the closing process.

Key players in bulk handling

Thanks to many years of experience and good client references in the Middle East, numerous large-volume four-rope dual scoop grabs with a volume of 32 m² were shipped to a port operator in the United Arab Emirates. This customer already has over 30 models of this type in use, handling limestone and aggregates. In addition, some larger ones were delivered to a steelworks in Qatar. The grabs are so popular with the customers because its robust features and performance make it ideal for dockside operations.

PEINER four-rope dual scoop grab is the allrounder among the clamshell grabs, made for all four-rope cranes – from mobile harbor cranes, via slewing cranes and articulated jib cranes up to ship unloaders Its shell design enable the handling of various materials. The model is based on the two holding and two closing ropes coming from the crane. The grabs are matched to the rope distances of the crane and fitted with generously dimensioned rope pulleys, so that the rope wear is minimized. Very good material penetration as well as an optimum degree of filling ensure the best possible handling quantities. They also have a small dead weight component. Thanks to the ideal ratio of dead weight to crane capacity, the rope grabs convince through maximum efficiency and low maintenance requirements.

Powerful handling tool for Liebherr’s world-first mobile harbour cranes

Offering solutions for the quick and safe handling of timber is part of PSLT’s routine business. Nevertheless, the giant motor timber grabs developed especially for Liebherr latest innovation are something special even by PEINER standards. There are no comparable timber grabs on the world market that can match this dimension. Six of these impressive timber grabs with a tong cross-section of up to 8.5 m² were recently commissioned at port of Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, more deliveries are scheduled.

The grabs work on Liebherr‘s mobile harbour cranes, a world-first in terms of size and capacity, and are predominantly used for the loading of logs for export. The technology allows to load and unload vessels without the use of ships’ cranes and this enables the operator to handle cargo for a wider range of vessels. Weighing 465 tonnes, the fully mobile Liebherr harbour crane has a 51m maximum lifting height, a 54m maximum outreach, dual outrigger pads that provide improved point loading distribution, 80 steerable wheel sets and has mobility of 360 degrees from any point.

PEINER motor timber grabs are mainly found in ports, sawmills and veneer mills, where there they are used under different operating conditions for handling logs, single logs (also exotics) or bundles of wood. The portfolio includes three model types which are designed for different applications such as for the handling of individual logs and spars as well as for large single logs from hardwood and deciduous wood. These grabs impress with its handling speed – depending on the grab size, unloading a truck is, for example, possible with only one loading cycle.

Jürgen Bialek is proud to complement the successful Liebherr cranes with the largest motorized timber grabs ever built. “This is certainly a showcase project but basically for us, every project is a reference project, which we realize with all our experience and performance in the best possible way. Thus, in over 50 years, we have gained many satisfied customers, which are the best proof of our successful work.” When asked about the outlook for the next years, Bialek remains optimistic: “The material handling numbers are going to be good in the near future. Over the next five years, we expect to overcome the current stagnation in revenue and the growth in the industry should continue. The main reasons for this are, in particular, improved export prospects as well as rising demand from the logistics sector.”

PEINER ship grabs – cost-efficient in procurement and operation

For 70 years PEINER grabs have been present on the market and are today distributed by PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies GmbH, a global player among the suppliers of bulk handling equipment. Common is their dual scoop grabs suitable for the maritime sector. In addition to the universally applicable rope grabs for general cargo cranes, the company offers electro-hydraulic motor grabs, which are used for single rope cranes and require a power supply from the crane. The most widely used motor grab is the MZG/L series. High handling quantities per loading cycle is the outstanding feature of this type of grab. By means of power-controlled hydraulic pumps, the electrical power supply is very efficiently converted into handling power. The motor grab achieves an optimum filling degree through high closing forces. No matter if light, medium or heavy bulk materials – with its customized dual scoop design the grab copes with different materials to be handled. One key advantage is that the grab control can be integrated into the control of the crane and operated from the crane cabin.

Among the rope grabs, the radio-controlled single-rope grab (EGF), is the predestined ship grab. Many bulk carrier operators use this proven and continuously developed rope grab in the tough cargo handling business, for good reason: Using this model allows any shipboard or container crane to handle bulk material in the shortest possible time without additional equipment. Their major advantage: they can work without power supply from the crane – the operator just has to charge the batteries and the grab is ready for operation. The PEINER radio-controlled single-rope grab can be precisely controlled wirelessly with the portable, robust handheld terminal. It enables reliable, interference-free radio communication up to 500 m. High-performance accumulators of the remote control guarantee continuous operation for up to 24 hours and can be easily changed within a few minutes without any extra tools.

PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies, Salzgitter, Germany, introduces high volume radio controlled single-rope grab (EGF 60) for the operation with a container crane at Port of Aarhus, the largest container port in Denmark.

At the beginning of 2015 PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies GmbH (PSLT) was approached by its customer Port of Aarhus with a request for a specific grab that can be operated with an existing container crane for the handling of bulk cargo. As most of the proven grabs could not be used to fulfill this requirement the company felt encouraged to develop an efficient solution tailored for customer’s needs. This was a challenging technical task: Since the crane is not equipped with the necessary hoisting gear/winches, mechanical two-rope and four-rope grabs are ineligible for operation with this type of crane. Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic motor grabs require a wide range of accessories to be installed on the crane and would go beyond the planned budget, hence also these grabs could not be taken into account. Another alternative is the use of Diesel grabs, however they are known to have a negative impact on the industrial safety and besides they provide limited operational flexibility. For the required handling capacity of more than 30 m³ the grab must have a powerful engine as well as an exhaust system to meet the permissible emission levels.

Finally, after all possibilities had been checked, PSLT decided for the only workable solution: The PEINER radio controlled single-rope grab (EGF) has already proved to be successful on board of bulk carriers over the past 15 years, however the grabs were primarily used for handling volumes from 12 to 15 m³. The goal of the Aarhus project was to construct an EGF with a volume of 32 m³ in order to use the existing crane lifting capacity even during grab operation. These specific grabs for the handling of animal feed, wood pellets and wood chips at the port of Aarhus are the largest radio controlled single-rope grabs ever built by PSLT.
In addition to a new design engineering of the basic unit with special cylinders the grabs offer a sensor attachment transmitting actual operational states to the crane crane controls and crane driver by wireless communication. This innovative feature helps crane operators to work even faster and more effective. The grabs are provided with a centralized shift of lubricating points and therefore easy to maintain.

An intelligent climbing assistance system ensures the highest standards of job safety for the maintenance staff on the job site. The grabs are assembled with a universal suspension that enables the operation both lengthways and crosswise. Our scope of supply also includes an adapter unit in the form of special load traverses to connect the grab with the crane headblock. The traverses feature a range of supplementary technics, e.g. proximity sensor, light and camera systems, control cabinets and electrical plugs.

Additionally, the EGF 60 is equipped with a unique locking system that considerably reduces the grab height. This feature particularly supports ship to ship bulk handling processes, for example during transportation of wheel loaders into the ship’s hold, where high structures on deck are often blocking the way. The grab shell can easily be fixed in position by hand without using any tools so that the grab height is reduced by half.

It is the first time that a PEINER radio controlled single-rope grab of such a large size will be operated at a container crane. We expect this pilot project to serve as a positive drive for further developments in this field and sincerely hope that it could be a starting point for the realization of more projects with this innovative technology. Jens Hvidegaard Dissing, Project Manager at Port of Aarhus, who accompanied the project from the idea stage to the first commissioning, is convinced about the new development. “Bulk Material Handling is essential to the success of ports. Our goal was to have an intelligent solution for our container cranes, with significant better efficiency in terms of speed and handling volume. We had an idea, and we found the right product: a PEINER radio controlled single-rope grab, that combines all the required features, together with additional benefits to meet today’s material handling challenges in the port of Aarhus.
