Many large modern Pulp Mills in Latin America have put their trust in Mantsinen material handling machines when optimizing operations and utilizing best practices in their wood yards and mill feeding operations. Brazilian Pulp manufacturer Suzano Papel e Celulose, one of the largest pulp manufacturers in the world, has relied on Mantsinen’s material handling expertise since 2018. The partnership is continuing with the largest machine order in Mantsinen’s history.

Suzano has been using Mantsinen machines at their Aracruz mill since 2018, with 4 units of Mantsinen 70 and 4 units of Mantsinen 120 operating around the clock. The feedback and satisfaction with these machines as well as the local service and parts support from JT Partners, Mantsinen dealer in Brazil, has ensured a continued trust in this partnership. A total of 10 additional units are already being delivered to Suzano’s new greenfield Cerrado Mill opening later in 2023.

Mantsinen is pleased to announce, that this fruitful and rewarding partnership has now resulted in the largest equipment order for Mantsinen in the company’s history. One single order of 16 units of Mantsinen 70 machines will replace older equipment at Suzano’s Tres Lagoas and Mucuri mills as well as some aging machines at the Aracruz factory.

Mantsinen CEO Mia Mantsinen considers the order as a tribute to the company’s extensive know-how:

• This order is a sign of trust in the forest industry expertise our team has accumulated over the past 60 years. Who would have guessed back in 1963 that our passion and innovativeness would later be rewarded with the trust from some of the world’s largest forest industry companies.

According to Mantsinen Area Sales Director in Latin America Mr. Samuli Seilonen, an increasing number of high capacity pulp mills have turned to Mantsinen when they need equipment that ensures both high productivity as well as low cost of ownership.

• Our long history in wood processing gives our 60-year-old company a clear advantage over our competitors, Mr. Seilonen says.

The equipment will be delivered in batches starting last quarter of 2023 running into the middle of 2024.

LOW CARBON FOOT PRINT

Many of the machines ordered will be electric powered, with Hybrilift used as additional means of energy saving. As the pulp mills produce their own electricity from wood residue, it is natural to save in the energy bill as well as minimize CO2 emissions wherever possible, contributing to Suzano’s environmental goals. All the wood grabs will also be supplied by Mantsinen, in this case the RGB and RGT 20 R3 designated wood grabs that are also trusted by Mantsinen Logistics Services at many of its own mill service contracts.

Additionally, a Mantsinen 100 Powerpack is included in the contract. The Powerpack provides added flexibility to move the electric powered machines, e.g. when changing the site of operation or moving the machine to the workshop for scheduled maintenance, decreasing the time switching between machines at the mill feeding table.

SERVICE COMMITMENT

According to Mr. Pierre Provete from Suzano, choosing Mantsinen as continued partner to replace the aging equipment was easy.

• We already had experience of Mantsinen machines from our Aracruz operations, so we had all
  the opex costs available. We need reliable material handling machines that can handle wood
  with low operating cost. We have very high standards in our operations, and with Mantsinen we
  can reach them, says Mr. Provete.
• For the operators, Mantsinen material handling machines have proven to be the most desired workplace, with A/C as standard and big, spacious cabin with great view.

Mantsinen local service partner JT Partners will be servicing and supporting Suzano in the use of the new machines. In fact the machines being delivered to the greenfield site in Cerrado will be under full maintenance contract, with JT Partners’ full service support at site.

Mantsinen Global Sales Director Patrik Starck highlights that Mantsinen has a dedicated Spare Parts stock in Uruguay for machines located Latin America. Now, with the new order, JT Partners will open additional Spare Part centers in Brazil.

• Additional Spare Parts centers will be established in Brazil with dedicated Mantsinen 70 spare parts available. The parts will already be customs-cleared, to ensure the parts’ availability required by a high frequency operation like Suzano.

INNOVATION AND DEDICATION

The material handling machines in wood handling were first introduced by the Mantsinen brothers, Veli and Jussi Mantsinen, at the Stora Enso Uimaharju mill already in the early 1970’s, then based on converted excavators. Since then, the machines have grown in size and speed, resulting in the present modern and cost effective machines running today at mills around the world.

Mantsinen Group has been active in Russia for almost 25 years. Mantsinen ceased export operations to Russia immediately after Russia began a war of aggression into Ukraine. At the same time, the company began to investigate different options for continuation of operations of the Russian subsidiaries.

• We are in the process of divesting our Russian businesses and are negotiating the sale of our subsidiaries. The main objective is to ensure a good solution for the Mantsinen Group and to ensure continuity for our local teams and customers. Negotiations with buyer candidates will be done as quickly as possible, but due to sanctions and constraints, it is difficult to predict an exact timetable, says Mia Mantsinen, the company’s CEO.

In the future, Russian companies will operate as independent companies and under a new name. Mantsinen Group will not continue its own operations in Russia after the sale of the companies. After the change, the Group’s only subsidiary is Mantsinen Sverige Ab in Sweden.

The reason for the machine renewal was that the pulp mill decided to increase production by 100% and we needed to solve the logistics accordingly. In all our investments, we look into the possibility of reducing carbon emissions.We wanted this solution because it combines two benefits: when you reduce emissions, you also reduce costs .It is a win-win situation. However, we still needed a diesel driven machine too, because we could not access electrical power all around the Pulp Mill area. PERFORMANCE AND EASY MAINTENANCE

One of the benefits of the Dualpower is easy maintenance. The technology is based on standard components, allowing easy service and normal spare parts availability. Pairing this technology with the Mantsinen Insight™ remote monitoring system allows smooth operation and less unexpected surprises. “The material handler works well, and it has reduced the need for maintenance. Mantsinen Group Ltd Oy and its Belgian distributor Heavy Handling bv have agreed to deepen their co-operation by appointing Heavy Handling as distributor also for France for the whole range of Mantsinen material handlers, attachments and services.

CO-OPERATION STARTED 2012

Mantsinen Group and Heavy Handling started the co-operation in 2012. The number of Mantsinen machines in Belgium and the Netherlands has grown ever since, to the extent that the fleet is larger than in any other market outside of the traditional Mantsinen home markets Finland and Russia. Mantsinen brings a new material handling machine, Mantsinen 140, to the market. It is the first portal machine of this size with turning wheels, which enables sideways movement and efficient use in limited space. Other manufacturers do not have an equivalent option available.

Mantsinen 140 is designed mainly to be used at ports in loading and unloading ships, but it is also great in pulp and steel mills in feeding operations and terminal works.

– 140 model, positioned between 120 and 160 models, completes our material handling offering. It is a natural step for clients who are looking for more tons per hour from their material handling machine without significantly bigger investment. Mantsinen 140 machines are already delivered and sold to several countries, although the official launch is in the beginning of September in our distributor meeting, says Tapio Pirinen, Vice President of Material Handling Machinery at Mantsinen.

Mantsinen Group, specializing in material handling machines and logistic services, will invest over 12 million euros in their factory facilities and equipment. The investment will be focused at a new production and office space, milling boring center and surface treatment line. This will be the most extensive onetime investment in production technology the company has made.

The main reason behind the investment is the rapid growth rate of sales of material handling machines during the previous years. Moreover, the company forecasts to double the turnover in the following decade, 2020s. Heavy material handling machines and hydraulic harbor cranes have been gaining market from traditional solutions, thus speeding up the growth of Mantsinen sales. Over 80 per cent of the production is exported worldwide.

– Our goal is to become a very significant supplier of material handling solutions globally. New investment on production technology allows the growth of production capacity and increasing the production efficiency, as well as increases our competitiveness on the market. This is an extensive investment for us, but on the other hand, only one phase of our comprehensive investment program, says Mia Mantsinen, CEO of the company. This type of investment is done for long run, and investment needs to adapt to future needs for decades to come. Modern equipment and spaces also add to the safety and ergonomic of the employees, and therefore hopefully to the well-being at work.

– New milling boring center and surface treatment line will meet both the existing and future needs in regards to size, capacity and functionality. Over 3,000m2 (32,000 sq. ft) of new production space will be built, encompassing an assembly space in addition to the equipment. This relates to a growth of over 30 per cent in our current production spaces, Mia Mantsinen notes.

In 2018, Mantsinen Group Ltd Oy celebrates its 55-year anniversary as a company. The Group, known of its logistics services and material handling machines, celebrated its anniversary on Saturday 22 September at the Liperi factory in Finland. At the same time, Veli Mantsinen celebrated his 80th birthday on 23 September with his family.

For Veli Mantsinen, a co-founder of the company, year 2018 marks the time for a generational change. “We are a family company, and working together is important to us,” says Veli Mantsinen. “My brother Jussi retired five years ago, and now it is my turn,” Veli continues.

Retirement means a generational change that will be carried out during September 2018. Veli Mantsinen releases his share of the company to his daughters Mia Mantsinen, Meeri Juutilainen and Mervi Mantsinen. Mia Mantsinen will continue as the CEO of the company, and she will become the main owner of the company. The successors will become part of the company board. At the same time, the company has agreed to acquire Ari Hakkarainen’s share of the company. This means that the company will be owned by members of the family and the operational management.

Global export from North Karelia

Our roots and the future are both important to us, says Veli Mantsinen. “My career as an entrepreneur began in Liperi and my home has always been in North Karelia,” says Veli. “My daughters have been around the globe, and the company’s future is in international growth. Now it is a good time to hand over leadership to the next generation on a solid basis.

The Mantsinen Group has a total of about 500 employees, of which 270 work in Finland and 230 in Russia. The Liperi factory produces material handling machines and port cranes, which have been delivered to almost 30 countries. Also the product development of machines and equipment takes place in Liperi. At the beginning of September, Mantsinen expanded its production by opening a second assembly unit in Rauma. The second business unit of the company, Logistics Services, provides services to customers mainly in the forest industry in Finland and Russia. “Annually, we process about 20 million tonnes of various materials and handle the wood terminal operations at several pulp mills,” says Mia Mantsinen.

Growth over time through dedicated work

Mantsinen has significantly extended its global distribution network over the last few years, and the results of this hard work can be seen in the volume of orders being received and in the positive momentum in the global investment business. The extension of production facilities allows us to considerably increase our production volumes. ‘The hydraulic port crane we developed is growing in popularity in markets around the world. Entering into new market areas places increasing demands upon our delivery chain, and so it’s a natural step for us to start assembling our machines near the sea because these days we are far more often shipping assembled equipment by sea,’ says Mia Mantsinen, the company’s Managing Director.

One foot in the forest, one foot on the sea shore 

Mantsinen has been known for over 55 years as a developer of terminal logistics for forestry work. The company is also the feeding equipment partner for Metsä Fibre’s Äänekoski and Rauma pulp mills. In the 2000s Mantsinen has added a second business unit alongside the service unit. Employing over 150 members of staff, the machinery unit’s product portfolio ranges from heavy hydraulic material processing machinery to port cranes, together with associated accessories and life-cycle services. ‘We are keeping our main office and product development functions in Liperi, northern Karelia, although this expansion means that other functions could also partially be based in Rauma. However, at the initial phase we are going to focus on the assembly of our products and shipping,’ Mantsinen continues. We have also started a development project at our Liperi production facilities and this will gather speed in 2019 and 2020. Recruitment is part of the daily work at Mantsinen: ‘We have recruited more than thirty people in Liperi during the past three years, but we plan to proceed more gradually in Rauma,’ adds Mantsinen.

Working with partners

Both Euroports Rauma Oy and the Port of Rauma, which is responsible for managing the area, have been Mantsinen’s partners for a long time. ‘Mantsinen Group was already familiar to us as a provider of cranes. We are happy to hear that our collaboration is about to become even deeper, because Mantsinen chose Rauma and Euroports’ industrial facilities as the base for their extended operations,’ says Juha Rehmonen, Account manager at Euroports Rauma. The Managing Director of the Port of Rauma Oy, Hannu Asumalahti, is likewise pleased to hear that Mantsinen chose Rauma. ‘I believe that the Port of Rauma can offer good logistics premises and room to produce and deliver cranes around the world.’

First deliveries to Uruguay 

Mia Mantsinen tells us that the first delivery from the new premises is destined for Uruguay, as the company is providing material handling machinery for raw materials logistics to the Montes del Plata pulp mill within the next twelve months. The delivery consists of twelve machines that help ensure that the raw materials logistics for the pulp mill, which are able to produce 1.4 million tonnes of pulp, run well and smoothly.

A new era for Vuosaari Harbour in Helsinki began in December 2017, when the world’s largest hydraulic crane, the Mantsinen 300, started operation there. The buyer of the crane, which weighs 373 tons and has a reach of 36 metres, is the logistics company Adolf Lahti Yxpila Ab, which is part of the KWH Group. The crane will be used in Vuosaari by Adolf Lahti’s affiliate, Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab.

The first major pulp shipment left Vuosaari in December 2017. The pulps are delivered to Vuosaari Harbour from Äänekoski, central Finland, by rail; the fully-loaded cargo train had 22 carriages. The estimated annual amount of cargo handled by the crane is about 800,000 tonnes.

“This project will increase our volume of freight traffic by about ten percent, which will really put the Mantsinen 300 to the test,” says Port of Helsinki Ltd CEO Kimmo Mäki.

According Rauanheimo area sales manager Niko Orpana and Adolf Lahti operative director Niko Miettinen, the Mantsinen 300 takes work efficiency at the port to an entirely new level. The Mantsinen 300 can efficiently load six pulp bundles at a time into ships of 40,000 DWT.

Orpana and Miettinen have faith in the Mantsinen 300 crane. In their view, among the benefits of the crane, in addition to efficiency, are speed, good handling, and the HybriLift® system, which provides as much as half of the energy needed for the work through an innovative energy recovery system.

“With Mantsinen we made a conscious decision to invest resources in top class technology. It’ll be interesting to see how much this saves on costs compared to traditional, counterweighted tower cranes,” Miettinen says.

The Mantsinen 300 has gained a strong foothold on international markets as well. Earlier this year, two Mantsinen cranes similar to the one in Vuosaari were put into operation in Belgium, at the Port of Antwerp and the Port of Ghent. According to Mantsinen Group’s vice president of the material handling division Tapio Pirinen, the Mantsinen 300 is the future of cargo handling.

“The possibilities offered by the Mantsinen 300 will transform how companies in the logistics sector think and operate. This is especially so when it comes to Handysize and Panamax vessels. So we’re actually leading the renewal of the entire field.

According to Kimmo Mäki, the Mantsinen 300 further enhances the international standing of Vuosaari Harbour, and creates opportunities to serve an extensive range of needs.

“I’m confident that this will lead to excellent growth in traffic volumes over the coming years,” Niko Miettinen says.
