PEINER ship grabs – cost-efficient in procurement and operation

For 70 years PEINER grabs have been present on the market and are today distributed by PEINER SMAG Lifting Technologies GmbH, a global player among the suppliers of bulk handling equipment. Common is their dual scoop grabs suitable for the maritime sector. In addition to the universally applicable rope grabs for general cargo cranes, the company offers electro-hydraulic motor grabs, which are used for single rope cranes and require a power supply from the crane. It enables reliable, interference-free radio communication up to 500 m. High-performance accumulators of the remote control guarantee continuous operation for up to 24 hours and can be easily changed within a few minutes without any extra tools.

North Carolina Ports opted for a new Liebherr portals lewing crane type LPS 420. The multi purpose machine is equipped with a special designed curve traveling gear that allows the crane to travel a 90 degree curve with a inner radius of 90 metres. The fullyassembled crane was handed over in autum 2019.

Rostock (Germany) February 2020 – In autum 2019 Liebherr Maritime Cranes handed over the first rail mounted gantry harbour crane to the United States of America. The customer North Carolina Ports (NCP) opted for a Liebherr LPS 420 with a special designed curve running gear for its terminal at the Port of Morehead City.

The special design of NCP’s terminal required the crane to be ready for operation at all quay edges of the rectangular terminal. To ensure this, the rail-mounted gantry crane was equipped with a special curve running gear. This allows the crane to travel through a 90 degree bend with an inner curve radius of 90 metres.

Multi Purpose Crane

The Port of Morehead City is a breakbulk and bulk facility, is one of the deepest on the United States East Coast, and it’s just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, the new LPS 420 is equipped as a multi-purpose crane and will be used by North Carolina Ports mainly for handling grain and fertilizer. It is also used for various project cargoes, including parts of wind turbines, trains and rails. The crane was shipped fully assembled. Which means, no time-consuming assembly was required on site and the crane was ready for operation shortly after unloading.

Gijón (Spain), November 2019 – Liebherr handed over the 100th Liebherr mobile harbour crane, a new LHM 600, to the Spanish customer Maritima del Principado in Gijón. Spain is now the third country in the world, alongside Russia and India, with a fleet of 100 or more Liebherr mobile harbour cranes.

Liebherr maritime cranes reached another milestone. Liebherr representatives of the maritime cranes headquarters in Rostock, Germany handed over the 100th LHM to the Spanish customer Maritima del Principado. The ceremony took place in Gijón, Spain. The new machine is an LHM 600 and belongs to Generation 5, the latest technical development stage in the Liebherr Mobile Harbour Crane program.

The history of the Liebherr mobile harbour crane in Spain started more than 27 years ago. In the Year 1992 Liebherr delivered its first mobile harbour crane to Spain. It was an LHM 1300. The crane was like many Liebherr products a pioneer of its time. A highly innovative and reliable crane in the market. The LHM 1300 proves its durability every day again, because it is still in operation in Spain.

“Today the population of mobile harbour cranes in Spain is at a high level of 179 machines in total,” comments Andreas Müller, Sales Director of Liebherr Mobile Harbour Cranes. “We at Liebherr maritime cranes are very proud to have achieved a market share of more than 55%. This great trust of our customers in us and our products and services shows that the Liebherr company philosophy is also lived in Spain.”

100 or more Liebherr mobile harbour cranes

There are only two other countries in the world that have a fleet of Liebherr mobile harbour cranes of 100 or even more machines. The first country to reach this magical mark was Russia, closely followed by India. With the recent handover of the LHM 600 to Maritima del Principado, Liebherr was now able to support 100 customers in Spain with its effective Mobile Harbour Crane technology. “We needed an efficient, agile and mobile material handler that we could use both in our storage yards and to load ships,” says Henning Bligenthal, CEO of Viela Export GmbH about the decision to purchase the 855 E material handler from SENNEBOGEN. “We handle 1 million tons of bulk agricultural goods every year, 150,000 tons of which we process with the grab. It was absolutely essential for us to think about reducing costs and saving energy.”

These are the precise words used to describe the 855 E material handler, equipped with the well-established SENNEBOGEN Green Hybrid energy recovery system. When the boom is lowered, gas gets compressed in a nitrogen piston accumulator at the rear of machine. This stored energy can then be reused during the next process with the help of an additional hydraulic cylinder.

As opposed to smaller system solutions with gas compression directly inside the cylinder, the SENNEBOGEN Green Hybrid System boasts a separate accumulator module at the rear of the machine. The result? A significant reduction in the engine power required and a machine that is able to work with almost constant power throughout the cylinder cycle.

What is important in a port? Range, endurance and safety.

It was not just the energy saving potential that was decisive in the choice of machine. “The versatility of SENNEBOGEN machines played a big part. We were able to configure a material handler that met our requirements to the letter!” exclaims Bligenthal. A customized solution was designed in conjunction with SENNEBOGEN sales and service partner SWECON – an 855 E with a long-lasting 231 kW diesel engine, a 2 meter pylon extension for a better view into the ship’s hull and a 20 meter banana equipment solution which allows the operator to work even at the lowest points along the ship’s hull.

The comfortable Maxcab, which can be elevated and moved forwards, keeps the operator safe and comfortable, and provides a viewing height of up to 7.5 meters. The gallery around the uppercarriage and the platform by the cab also contribute significantly to the operator’s safety, making access to the cab and the maintenance areas much easier.

Mantsinen brings a new material handling machine, Mantsinen 140, to the market. It is the first portal machine of this size with turning wheels, which enables sideways movement and efficient use in limited space. Other manufacturers do not have an equivalent option available.

Mantsinen 140 is designed mainly to be used at ports in loading and unloading ships, but it is also great in pulp and steel mills in feeding operations and terminal works.

Since the end of 2018 there has been something new to catch the eye in the industrial area of Nuremberg’s port – an 825 SENNEBOGEN E-series material handler painted black, the color of choice for SWRN GmbH, but still green at heart. The family company uses the mobile scrap specialist with a 129 kW diesel engine for on-site sorting, loading and processing of old scrap.

Flexibility required for material range

Each month 4,500 tons of mixed old scrap are delivered to the 12,000 square meter site to be processed and recycled. It consists mainly of non-ferrous metals and scrap cable that can be processed further both nationally and internationally. “We need specific storage areas for the 50 different types of scrap that we sort on a daily basis and this automatically reduces the space we have for machines. For this reason, we need a very agile but at the same time robust solution, which we have found in our SENNEBOGEN 825 E,” explains SWRN’s Technical Director, Robin Reindel.

In addition to the machine’s compact size, the stick’s quick change system contributes to the machine’s on-site flexibility. “We can react quickly to the different material types and, where necessary, switch immediately between the orange peel grab and the magnet plate,” says Reindel.

Multi-functional, safe and comfortable

The standard at SENNEBOGEN is to never build a standard machine – this is true of SWRN’s 825 E which has numerous features that cater for the customer’s individual requirements. In addition to the extraordinary customer-colored paint job, those responsible also chose the spacious Maxcab Industry, which can be elevated by up to 2.7 meters, with continuous windshield and bullet proof glass. This guarantees that the operator can both see their work area without anything getting in the way and also be as safe as possible.

The 14 meter long equipment is perfectly suited to the challenging tasks on site. The quick change system means that the orange peel grab or the magnet plate can be fitted in minutes. The magnet plate is run from an additional 15 kW magnet generator. The generator and the machine’s hydraulic system are finely coordinated to achieve the best energy efficiency levels.
