The first containers of the New Silk Road have been loaded in the port of Rostock. EUROPORTS Germany used their recently acquired Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes to quickly load the containers from Xi’an in China. EUROPORTS Germany plans to expand Rostock into a distribution centre and also to connect Sweden and Italy to the New Silk Road link.

Rostock (Germany) April 2020 – After a long period of preparation, the first containers of the New Silk Road were loaded at the beginning of April in Rostock’s overseas port. The containers started their journey in the Chinese city Xi’an, which marks the eastern point of the Silk Road. The containers were loaded with electrical appliances, car parts and other consumer goods from China. After a 10,000-kilometre journey, they were transferred from ship to rail by EUROPORTS Germany using Liebherr mobile harbour cranes in the overseas port of Rostock.

In recent years, terminal operator EUROPORTS Germany has prepared itself for the challenges ahead by purchasing two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes. The cranes offer maximum flexibility as they can be used throughout the terminal due to their outstanding mobility. In addition to container and general cargo handling, they are also used for heavyduty tandem lifts. With a capacity of up to 144 tonnes per unit, tandem lifts of up to 288 tonnes are possible.

Liebherr’s Maritime Training Centre trains EUROPORTS Germany personnel

As a competent service provider and training specialist for maritime products, Liebherr guarantees efficient and safe crane operation at the highest level. Several employees of EUROPORTS Germany were trained by professional Liebherr trainers in an extensive training course on the general handling of the Liebherr mobile harbour crane as well as on the use of the various additional features. In addition, maintenance work was explained and the actual handling of various goods under different conditions was tested using the Liebherr simulator LiSIM.

This represents an increase of € 1,199 million or 11.4 % compared with the previous year. Despite the slowdown in global economic growth, 2019 was once again a record year for the Liebherr Group. Both the construction machinery and mining equipment divisions recorded overall increases in sales revenues, as did the other product areas overall. Revenues from construction machinery and mining equipment rose by 11.8 %to € 7,640 million, with contributions from the Earthmoving, Mobile Cranes, Tower Cranes, as well as Concrete Technology and Mining divisions.
Bulle (Switzerland), April 6, 2020 – In 2019, the Liebherr Group completed another very successful business year with turnover of € 11,750 million.

In the other product areas, which include Maritime Cranes, Aerospace and Transportation Systems, Gear Technology and Automation Systems, Domestic Appliances, Components, and Hotels, turnover rose by a total of 10.5 % to € 4,110 million.

The success of the 2019 business year can be attributed to the very positive sales performance in almost all sales regions of the Liebherr Group. Sales continued to
increase within the European Union, which is Liebherr’s most important sales region. One reason for this is the favorable market development, especially in Germany and France, but also, for example, in Spain and Denmark. Positive growth impulses also came from Russia and Norway. The Liebherr Group recorded its most significant increase in sales in North America. In Asia and Oceania this positive trend was driven in particular by the markets in Australia, China, Singapore and Japan. Slight increases in turnover were also achieved in Africa and in the Near and Middle East. There were only slight declines in Central and South America.

The Liebherr Group achieved a net profit of € 429 million in 2019, an increase compared with the previous year, whereas the operating result has fallen slightly
compared to the previous year. The financial result showed a very positive development.

The 2019 business year saw a significant increase in the workforce. At the end of the year, the Liebherr Group had a total of 48,049 employees worldwide, representing an increase of 1,880 compared to the previous year.

Traditionally high investments in research and development

As a high-tech company, the Liebherr Group pursues the goal of making a decisive contribution to shaping the technological progress in sectors relevant to the Group. Liebherr invested € 592 million in research and development last year. The bulk of this was used in the development of new products. A large number of research projects with universities, other higher education institutions, and research institutes were initiated and continued.

A special area of focus for these research projects is the topic of electrification. As part of the EU Technology Initiative “Clean Sky 2 / Horizon 2020”, Liebherr researched the electric variants of flight control systems, landing gear and air management systems in order to make flying more efficient and environmentally friendly in the future. Intensive work on alternative drive technologies was also carried out in the area of construction machines.

Important issues across the wide range of products and services include digitisation, safety, and the automation of machines. For example assistance systems have been developed, which support the safe operation of construction machines. An important project in digital transformation is Condition Monitoring, which makes possible the monitoring of components in complex machines and systems.

Investments in production, sales, and service exceed industry average

€ 756 million was invested in the production sites and the global sales and service network. This means the Liebherr Group reduced its investment activities by
€ 73 million compared to the previous year, however, with an investment rate of approximately 6%, the Liebherr Group is still above the average of the mechanical
engineering sector. Offset against this was depreciation of € 541 million. A new production site for the Concrete Technology division was built in Bulgaria. The
Aerospace and Transportation Systems division invested in buildings in Friedrichshafen (Germany), Toulouse (France), Singapore, and Bulgaria. Major
investments were also made in Germany, for example, in a new sales and service center at Hamburg port. A new customer center for the Domestic Appliances division was set up at the Ochsenhausen location in Germany.

In the Gear Technology and Automation Systems product segment, the Kempten location (Germany) has been modernized. Moreover, in the Maritime Cranes division, the TCC 78000, one of the most powerful rail-mounted heavy-duty cranes in the world, was successfully installed in Rostock port.

Outside Europe, Liebherr invested in projects such as the set-up of Liebherr- Transportation Systems (China) Co., Ltd., the production site of Liebherr-
Verzahntechnik in Yongchuan (China), as well as the cooperative venture between the Components division and Shanghai Diesel Engine Co. Ltd.

No reliable forecasts for revenue development in 2020

The Group’s order situation at the end of 2019 as well as far into the first quarter of 2020 can be described as very good. The due to the impact of the Corona virus
significantly restricted business activities in many markets will obviously influence the turnover in 2020. The extent to which our business will be impacted cannot be forecasted reliably at the time this annual report is compiled. However, the Liebherr Group will ensure that all organizational units have implemented the necessary measures to guarantee that customer demands are met with the usual reliability, also in 2020 and beyond. The financial strength of the Liebherr Group enables a rapid resumption of reduced activities in production, sales and service units.

On Monday, April 6, 2020, the Liebherr Group publishes its current annual report. In addition to detailed figures, it contains a magazine section reviewing the past financial year. In an interview, Dr. h.c. Dipl.-Kfm. Isolde Liebherr, Dr. h.c. Dipl.-Ing. (ETH) Willi Liebherr, Stéfanie Wohlfahrt and Jan Liebherr give their summary for 2019.

To ensure this, the rail-mounted gantry crane was equipped with a special curve running gear. This allows the crane to travel through a 90 degree bend with an inner curve radius of 90 metres.

“The addition of the new LPS 420 rail-mounted gantry crane at the Port of Morehead City represents North Carolina Ports’ commitment to investing in the future and long-term success of the Port, its customers and the North Carolina economy. The new crane will enable us to more efficiently handle a diverse range of cargoes and ultimately better meet customer demand.” – Paul J. Cozza, North Carolina Ports Executive Director

Multi Purpose Crane

The Port of Morehead City is a breakbulk and bulk facility, is one of the deepest on the United States East Coast, and it’s just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, the new LPS 420 is equipped as a multi-purpose crane and will be used by North Carolina Ports mainly for handling grain and fertilizer. It is also used for various project cargoes, including parts of wind turbines, trains and rails. The crane was shipped fully assembled. Which means, no time-consuming assembly was required on site and the crane was ready for operation shortly after unloading.

About North Carolina Ports

North Carolina’s ports in Wilmington and Morehead City and Charlotte Inland Port link the state’s consumers, business and industry to world markets and serve as magnets to attract new business and industry to the State of North Carolina. Port activities contribute statewide to more than 87,700 jobs and $678 million each year in state and local tax revenues.

Kirchdorf an der Iller (Germany), 30 January 2020 – An exceptional machine: The LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic is not only the first electrically-operated port handling machine in its weight class. It is also the world’s largest electrically operated Liebherr port handling machine with gantry undercarriage as well as the largest port handling machine Liebherr has ever produced. The machine was handed over and commissioned in DaFeng Port in the Chinese province of Jiangsu.

The LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic is the world’s largest, electrically-operated Liebherr port handling machine with gantry undercarriage. The entire port handling machine has been supplied by Liebherr: All components were developed, produced and tested by Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH in Kirchdorf an der Iller, Germany; from the attachments to the work equipment, the hydraulic cab elevation and uppercarriage. The rail-mounted portal of this giant was developed in close cooperation with Liebherr- MCCtec Rostock GmbH.

Energy-saving colossus

With an operating weight of approximately 200 tonnes, the LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic is the largest port handling machine ever made by Liebherr. Fitted with
Liebherr’s standard ERC system, in addition to the engine power, it can also store energy when lowering the equipment available. This allows the LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic to achieve an output of up to 614 kW with energy savings of 30% at the same time. An additionally integrated high-voltage transformer reduces the 10 kV supply voltage of the local mains network to 400V which is then used to operate the main drive of the machine, a 400 kW Liebherr electric motor.

Together towards a customized machine

Liebherr’s port handling machine is specifically tailored to meet the customer’s requirements. For example, the uppercarriage has not been seated in the conventional manner, centrally on the rail mounted portal. Instead it has been positioned off-centre, towards the side facing the sea. With its 16.5 m long, angled boom and 15 m long, straight stick, the LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic can cover the entire working area of a 10 thousand tonne timber-handling ship and more than 70% of a 30 thousand tonne timber-handling ship. The freely positionable spacious cab provides the operator with a perfect view and the Liebherr hydraulic quick coupler system is used to change the mechanically operated attachments quickly and safely from the cab.

For Liebherr, it was very important to involve the customer in each stage of the overall project. Technicians from DaFeng Port were present in the manufacturing facility in Kirchdorf an der Iller during the assembly process in order to gain in depth knowledge about this bespoke Liebherr machine. Engineers from Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH provided support in DaFeng Port for the entire build, commissioning and operator training.

Machine delivery ceremony: en route to the “green port”

Representatives from the earthmoving division travelled to Dafeng, Jiangsu, to take part in the handover celebrations. As part of the ceremony Joachim Strobel (Managing Director Sales, Liebherr-EMtec GmbH) symbolically handed a large golden key to the General Manager of DaFeng Port, Ji Xiaobo. Operation of China’s first electrically-operated port handling machine in the 200-tonne category started officially with the handover. This marks a milestone in the close partnership between Liebherr and DaFeng Port.

During the handover ceremony, Ji Xiaobo emphasized that “The use of the electrically-operated port handling machine is of huge importance to DaFeng Port and our goal of developing DaFeng Port as a “green port”. The LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic will also help DaFeng Port achieve an annual handling capacity of 100 million tonnes.”

Increase operational efficiency

With the successful introduction of two Liebherr A 934 C material handling machines, DaFeng Port initially considered large-scale handling operations in order to improve the efficiency of timber handling. Following an extensive analysis phase as well as various visits to Liebherr material handling machines already in operation, DaFeng Port was ultimately won over by the capability of the LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic and decided to purchase it.

Vice General Manager Lin Feng was also impressed by the high level of efficiency of Liebherr’s port handling machine: “The LH 150 ET Gantry Port Litronic is 2.5 times more productive than jib cranes for unloading wood. This shortens the waiting times of the ships and significantly reduces the cost of unloading the timber per tonne. This means that the operational efficiency of our port increases considerably making DaFeng Port more competitive.”

In total, approximately 207,000 containers and 51.14 million tonnes of material were handled in the port in 2018. DaFeng Port is the most important hub in the center of Jiangsu province. It is making enormous efforts to develop its four business areas of loading/unloading wind turbine blades, the timber trade, the RO-RO service and grain processing and to increase their efficiency.

Rostock (Germany), November 2019 – Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH announces the arrival of DEME’s offshore vessel “Orion”. The large-scale project is thus entering the next exciting phase – the erection of the biggest offshore crane Liebherr Maritime Cranes has ever constructed, the HLC 295000.

The “Orion” reached the Liebherr Rostock on the 22nd of November 2019. Following the arrival in Rostock, the assembly of the HLC 295000 is going to begin. The manufacture of Liebherr’s first HLC is a revolutionary project that is now ready to go into the final phase.

Over the past months, the technical and organizational efforts were immense. Several thousand tonnes of steel have been formed, welded and assembled into a product that is unique for Liebherr. Not only the size of the crane, but also the size of the individual components and main parts is exciting. The HLC boom alone is 160 metres long and the whole crane has a height of 90 metres. Assembled on a huge pedestal the crane is going to have a lifting height of up to 180 metres – almost twice as high as the Statue of Liberty in New York. With a lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes at more than 30 metres outreach the HLC 295000 could lift nine fully loaded A380 airplanes in one go.

In order to install the giant HLC 295000 on the “Orion”, the recently inaugurated TCC 78000 will support the assembly work. With its maximum lifting capacity of 1,600 tonnes and a max. lifting height of 158 metres, the TCC 78000 is predestined for this kind of challenging operation. The newly developed travelling cargo crane (TCC) is equipped with double bogeys (two rails per side) and has a track gauge of 30 metres. Therefore, the gantry crane provides optimum flexibility for handling all types of heavy goods.

Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH is looking forward to entering the final stages of the realization of this landmark offshore project.
