Konecranes and Fluidmesh Networks announce that they have joined forces and successfully carried out proof-of-concept testing of fully wireless communication for the Konecranes Automated RTG system. This breakthrough allows container terminal operators to roll out remote control and automation to RTGs in the container yard without running fiber or cable spools, with substantial savings in cost and time.

Port and container terminal operators have been embracing automation to increase productivity and give better working conditions to their employees. Many of the newest and largest container terminals have been adopting some level of automation and support for remote operations: from ship-to-shore cranes, to horizontal transport, to automated stacking cranes. However, this has not been the case for RTGs, which are widely used in container terminals around the world. Much of the world’s RTG fleet is diesel-powered, and there have been limited options for automating RTGs given the fact that running cables to them is costly and often unpractical. Konecranes and Fluidmesh have been working closely to solve the connectivity challenge, creating a new opportunity for container terminal operators.

The automation solution for RTGs comes as part of the Konecranes ARTG 2.0 system update, which was in development for over two years with thousands of hours of field testing. Fluidmesh MPLS-based wireless technology has been used to guarantee low latency and high throughput to the RTGs for control and live-video data. The system has been designed to operate on licensed as well as unlicensed frequencies around the world, providing north of 99.95% uptime in real working conditions.

“We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to work with a leader like Konecranes and contribute to a system that helps container terminal operators around the world to embrace automation and drive the productivity of their RTGs,” comments Cosimo Malesci, Fluidmesh Co-Founder and EVP Sales and Marketing. “Our wireless MPLS-based technology has been proven in many vehicle automation systems around the world where 802.11 WiFi or LTE haven’t been able to deliver. Our focus on seamless roaming, extremely low latency and high throughput wireless networks to drive productivity, safety, and security continues to pay off. We are truly honored to have been able to deliver such performance to the container terminal space.”

“We have been impressed by Fluidmesh Wireless MPLS technology since day one” comments Sampo Pihkala, Chief System Engineer ARTG at Konecranes. “We have been testing many different wireless technologies for crane operations over the last decade and the throughput and reliability delivered by Fluidmesh is unparalleled. Being able to work with a company that truly understands the requirements and challenges in the OT and port automation space has helped us to bring a truly innovative solution to the market in record time.”

This cooperation with Fluidmesh is part of Konecranes’ path to port automation, where container terminals improve productivity and safety in manageable steps. From smart features up to full automation, the path can include supervised operation and remote operation to smoothly introduce the power of automation. The path to port automation applies to all container handling equipment brands. Full automation can be the final goal but it doesn’t have to be. Flexibility is the key.

Konecranes has signed a contract with Long Beach Container Terminal for 30 additional Konecranes Gottwald Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) which will be delivered in Q4 2021 and commissioned by Q2 2022. The order, which was booked in March 2020, reflects the growing momentum behind Konecranes’ path to port automation approach. Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) currently operates a fleet of 72 lead-acid, battery-driven Konecranes Gottwald Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). The 30 new AGVs will greatly expand LBCT’s current, complete system which includes a Battery Exchange System (BES), transponder navigation and a fence control safety system. It was delivered turn-key, completely integrated in advance. In a separate order, Konecranes will provide pre-engineering for a second BES that will be installed for redundancy reasons as part of the final phase of the terminal’s construction. It will have an improved design resulting from operational knowledge drawn from the initial BES. Ari Rämö, Region Americas Sales Manager, Konecranes Port Solutions, said: “This order from LBCT is a strong vote of confidence in our Automated Guided Vehicle technology and its long-term viability in terms of constantly improving eco-efficiency and productivity.” Anthony Otto, President of LBCT LLC, states: “LBCT is very pleased with the performance of....

It is waste wood, presorted for further processing. With the help of a shredder, different sizes of valuable raw material will be created from the discarded pieces.

The mobile material handler 818 E from SENNEBOGEN is used to load the shredder with bulky pieces of wood that are brought over by the 355 E telehandler. Equipped with an elevating comfort Maxcab, the 818 E’s operator has a great view of the shredding plant at a viewing height of 5.50 m. “Thanks to the elevating cab I can see straight away if the material is building up in the shredder filling shaft and I can intervene if necessary. The cab is also very spacious and comfortable,” says the operator. The non-slip platform and the railings by the entry provide additional safety on the way up to the cab and on the way back down. An additional protective guard on the windshield and floodlights on the equipment also contribute to a safe environment for the operator.

While the material handler is loading mountains of waste wood into the shredder in a fast work cycle, the SENNEBOGEN 355 telehandler carries out various other tasks. These include moving the wood supplies to within the reach of the material handler and keeping the yard tidy. However, its main job is transporting the chopped wood pieces to the storage area and stacking them up there. There are three stacks, sorted by the size of the material. They range from coarse woodchips to fine sawdust, which, amongst other things, is reused in pellet form as bedding for house pets. The large bucket, which has a loading capacity of 4 m³, means the operator can get the job done quickly and with fewer trips.

DUSTY ENVIRONMENT – CONSISTENT RELIABLE PERFORMANCE

You cannot shred without creating dust. Anyone who has worked with wood will know how very fine sawdust is and how it gets absolutely everywhere. The risk it poses to humans and machines in day-to-day work should, therefore, not be underestimated. On the one hand it is not healthy for humans to, for example, breathe in the particles, and on the other hand a buildup of deposits in filters or engines can pose a fire risk.

In order to best protect not only the machine, but primarily the people too, SENNEBOGEN machines have series standard equipment that provides benefits for both. The SENNEBOGEN 355 E telehandler has a series standard reversible fan which means that the engine area can be regularly freed of dust and dirt by means of a strong blast of air from the outside. This ensures the engine maintains its optimal cooling capacity and protects it from overheating, keeping it productive and reliable.

The operator themselves is protected from various environmental influences by the Multicab on the 355 E telehandler and the Maxcab on the 818 E material handler. Whether it is raining, cold, hot or dusty, thanks to the series standard air-conditioning, the operator can concentrate on their work without distractions in a cab adjusted to the temperature that suits them best. The telehandler’s elevating cab also provides a bonus when it comes to visibility. “When I’m loading and stacking material, I have a great view of what’s going on both in front and behind, and I can adjust my angle of vision to my requirements without cricking my neck. When traveling, the elevated cab remains stable and doesn’t judder. The air suspension does a really good job,” says the operator of the 355 E.

Demolition machines must reliably do their job: tearing down, crushing, transporting and loading. Important criteria in the search for the right machine for the job are whether the machine and hydraulic system have the necessary power for the operation, the smallest possible rear radius, and the selection of the required attachments. The latter should be as flexibly interchangeable as possible, as the intervals between demolition and sorting activities may vary from hour to hour, depending on the storage capacity on the construction site. At the same time, a comfortable and safe working environment must be created for the operators of the demolition machines, in which they feel at ease all day long. SENNEBOGEN’s 825 Mobile E-Series fulfils all of these factors, but it can do even more: The mobile material handler used in demolition projects with a powerful and economical 129 kW Stage V diesel engine becomes a multifunctional all-rounder on demolition sites and scores with precision, especially in narrow spaces.

ALL TASKS ON THE DEMOLITION SITE COMBINED IN ONE SOLUTION

The days when many different construction machines could be seen on demolition sites are now a thing of the past. Indeed, there is a clear trend towards optimized machine park planning to minimize downtimes, in order to make the best possible use of the operators’ manpower and thus reduce costs. Moreover, the space available in densely populated inner cities is usually not sufficient to further restrict the narrow working area with unused machines.

Just like a Swiss army knife, SENNEBOGEN’s mobile demolition solutions in machine sizes 817 to 825 therefore offer a wide range of possible uses: from selective dismantling, i.e. the targeted deconstruction and subsequent sorting of building components, the crushing of components with concrete pulverizers and demolition shears to the loading of demolition waste into trucks or storage containers. In the case of the 825 E-Series, this is particularly easy to achieve in practice thanks to a fully hydraulic quick-change unit at the end of the grab stick, allowing the operator to switch from bucket or shear to sorting grab use in just a few minutes. In addition, the powerful hydraulic circuit guarantees reliable and precise working, including shear applications weighing up to 2.5 t at a reach height of up to 14 m.

COMPACT, FLEXIBLE AND EASY TO TRANSPORT

Two factors determine the success of construction sites: whether the time planned in advance was sufficient and whether the available resources were used efficiently. Here, too, mobile demolition solutions offer a decisive competitive advantage: No matter where there is demand on the construction site, the maneuverable driving machines can change places without any complications and immediately proceed with the next task. When used for classic overhead demolition work, the machines also excel with the optional 30° tiltable cab, providing the operator with a better view over his working area. The same applies to truck loading, as the tilting operator’s cab can also be raised smoothly. At a comfortable viewing height of 5.7 m, operators can look into the insides of a truck all the more easily and thus distribute the load more safely.

When purchasing demolition equipment, in addition to versatility on the construction site, attention must be paid to how they can be handled in daily use. Especially costly heavy-duty transports can have a strong impact in the long run: a figure that should be kept as low as possible. SENNEBOGEN has therefore developed special transport kinematics for the 825 E-Series demolition, whereby the machine is transported in its entirety without removing the stick or counterweight. Thanks to it being a mobile version, the machine is ready to start in just a couple of minutes as soon as it has been driven off the low loader.

MAXIMUM SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY

To protect both man and machine equally, there are numerous additional features that prove themselves useful on the construction site. The Maxcab, for example, can be equipped with a safety package on request. This includes protective grilles on the roof and front windscreen as well as bullet-proof glazing on all windows to keep potential dangers away from the driver and machine. Optional protective plates for the cylinders ensure that the piston rod remains permanently intact.

Not only does the cab’s 30° tilt contribute to the driver’s good overview of his entire working area, but also the two security cameras on the right and at the rear provide additional support. They transmit their signal to a screen in the cab, which is particularly important when slewing maneuvers are carried out on narrow demolition sites to ensure optimum monitoring of the machine’s 2.8 m rear area. Additional cameras, for example on the stick, can be installed on the machine at any time if desired.

Thanks to a wide range of different technologies, all of which are represented by the term “Green Efficiency”, diesel-powered SENNEBOGEN machines operate with particularly low emissions, low wear and tear and save energy. With a glance inside the machine, operating costs can be reduced significantly, e.g. thanks to the built-in hydraulic pump that pumps the oil through large-scale valves and hoses, according to the lifting or demolition task to be carried out. The entire hydraulic circuit is thus relieved by means of a lower system pressure, which results in a proven reduction in wear on pressure-sensitive components. Energy-intensive auxiliary consumers such as the fan are also thermostatically controlled in SENNEBOGEN diesel machines and are therefore only activated when required. EcoMode, automatic idle and automatic stop reduce diesel consumption to a minimum, when handled optimally by up to 25%: These intelligent, ex-works installed engine speed control systems help demolition professionals to reduce operating costs sustainably – without the need for separate operator training.

It is therefore not surprising that owner Hans Benno Suttner was one of the first to discover the SENNEBOGEN 355 E, which was launched on the market in 2019, for use in the woodworking plant and has now started trial operations.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS – MULTIFUNCTIONAL USE IN TIMBER HANDLING AND LOADING

“The SENNEBOGEN Telescopic Loader 355 E combines the best of both worlds: as solid and stable as a telescopic handler and as strong and robust as a wheel loader”, Suttner explains the advantages of the SENNEBOGEN 355 E.

At Holzmarkt Suttner there are always between 1000 and 2000 fm in stock in the log yard and moved by a stationary loading crane. The new telehandler will be used in future to load the annual 3000 m³ of sawmill by-products onto trucks. Four times a week a truck comes for this purpose, which can be safely loaded using the 4 m³ light material shovel. Thanks to the Multicab cab, which can be elevated to 4.25 m eye level, the driver has always an optimum overview. But the machine can also be used flexibly for handling lumber and logs with its SML-Power. With the telescopic boom, material can also be fetched from the second and third rows, lifted up high and, above all, safely stacked.

Driver Gerhard Kreipl, who is working with the machine, compares the telehandler with the previous wheel loader that is to be replaced:

“With 4m³ of bark mulch in the shovel, the telehandler is extremely stable even with its 5 t load. Its driving style is more gentle on the material and while our previous wheel loader quickly lifts the rear axle here, the SENNEBOGEN stays well on the ground.

But for Suttner the SENNEBOGEN 355 E has even more advantages. He wants to use the machine as a multifunctional all-rounder, also for service work with a platform or in winter with a snow plough. “Anything is possible”, says Armin Stark, from the responsible sales and service partner Fischer & Schweiger, who sees great potential with the 355 E, especially in the timber industry and for smaller timber plants.

MOVE BIG THINGS – THE NEW DUTY CYCLE CRANE CLASS

The new SENNEBOGEN 6100 E, a duty cycle crane in the current E series, has been designed with challenging, dynamic applications in mind. His first job took the 100 tonne duty cycle crane to Rhoon in the Netherlands, where it was used by Van ‘t Hek for a wide range of lifting and foundation work. Here it is helping to install 105 HEK-combi-piles, each 33.5 metres long and with a weight of 12.3 tonnes each, as foundations for the new town hall of the municipality of Albrandswaard As an auxiliary crane, it will perform important tasks within the entire foundation work. The duty cycle crane will be lifting the formwork for the drilling, inserting the Octicon® prefabricated piles used on this construction site into the borehole and filling it with mortar using a bucket. The trend in civil engineering is clear: longer and longer piles and sheet piles are being used, the piling equipment is becoming significantly heavier: the SENNEBOGEN 6100 E is already up to these future challenges today.

INDIVIDUALLY CONFIGURABLE ACCORDING TO CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS

Available ex works in the Heavy Duty version and with a wide range of equipment options, the SENNEBOGEN 6100 E can be individually configured to customer requirements. At Van ‘t Hek, it is used as a crane, but also for dragline bucket applications, for grab work or as a casing machine with leader. The big advantage of this HD crawler crane is that it has extra hydraulics and has more hydraulic power than a “standard” 100 t crane. In this way it is possible to work without an additional power pack, and the crane itself supplies the hydraulic hammer with the necessary oil flow.

EASY TO TRANSPORT

With the crawler tracks fully extended, the 6100 E has a width of 5 metres, offering outstanding stability. For transport, the undercarriage can be retracted to 3.5 metres and the transport weight reduced to less than 41 tonnes. The duty cycle crane can assemble itself without an auxiliary crane, this also applies to the self-assembly system of the ballast: The 6100 E can pick up and set down its own ballast.

CRANE OPERATOR ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT SAFETY, COMFORT AND ERGONOMICS

Crane operator Marc Mulder is very pleased with the new crawler crane, especially the comfort of the Maxcab cabin, the operation and the safety were completely convincing. He has to get out of the cab regularly to assist in this project – the good accessibility via many steps offers great added value, a circumferential upper carriage railing as well as numerous catwalk options provide maximum safety for the driver and operator. Van ‘t Hek and its customers attach great importance to this. Additional headlights have been fitted and additional railings have been added to the upper carriage. Side steps on the crawler tracks allow safe access to the Maxcab, which can be tilted 20° and has a safety guard. The window is made of special bullet-proof glass, one of the many options Van ‘t Hek has chosen.

STRONG PERFORMANCE, STRONG APPEARANCE

Fittet with a 52.3 m lattice boom and a 451 kW 6-cylinder engine, the 100 t duty cycle crane of course meets the stage V emission standards. The engine is equipped with an auto-stop function and switches off automatically when it is idling for a defined period of time, which saves fuel. The large pumps provide high hydraulic power, so that the duty cycle crane can operate a vibrator or pile driver itself. For this purpose, hydraulic lines are laid up to the distributor at the front of the crane. If the hydraulic power needs to be increased, an optional extra hydraulic system can be supplied that provides an additional 420 l/min. The 6100 E is equipped with two 16 t main winches and a third winch with 11 t pulling force.

The new 100 t SENNEBOGEN duty cycle crane can play to all its strengths on the first project in Rhoon and is convincing all along the line in its Dutch baptism of fire.

After a 10,000-kilometre journey, they were transferred from ship to rail by EUROPORTS Germany using Liebherr mobile harbour cranes in the overseas port of Rostock.

In recent years, terminal operator EUROPORTS Germany has prepared itself for the challenges ahead by purchasing two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes. The cranes offer maximum flexibility as they can be used throughout the terminal due to their outstanding mobility. In addition to container and general cargo handling, they are also used for heavyduty tandem lifts. With a capacity of up to 144 tonnes per unit, tandem lifts of up to 288 tonnes are possible.

Liebherr’s Maritime Training Centre trains EUROPORTS Germany personnel

As a competent service provider and training specialist for maritime products, Liebherr guarantees efficient and safe crane operation at the highest level. Several employees of EUROPORTS Germany were trained by professional Liebherr trainers in an extensive training course on the general handling of the Liebherr mobile harbour crane as well as on the use of the various additional features. In addition, maintenance work was explained and the actual handling of various goods under different conditions was tested using the Liebherr simulator LiSIM.
