Maximizing efficiency was top-of-mind for Sun Recycling partners Brian Shipp and Andrew Springer when they recently purchased a new SENNEBOGEN 818 material handler from Midlantic Equipment. It was the third 818 they had purchased over a 14-month period. The challenge at Sun Services, in the Beltway region of Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC: running inside a building that moves up to 800 tons of construction and demolition debris every day is going to be tough on a machine.

Their facility, first opened in 2013, started with a conventional fleet of wheel loaders and excavators. Looking for alternatives to load their new shredder, their wish list led them to consider replacing the excavator with material handlers. “We wanted an elevating cab,” Shipp recalls. “And we needed rotation in the grab in order to pick out material that should not go into the shredder.” But a material handler that could live in the recyclers’ extreme environment remained a top priority.

Serious about recycling

Shipp and his father Gary, first got in to the trash business with Springer in 2004. As their knowledge of trash hauling expanded, their interest in new processes for recycling grew, as well. Following a 5-year process of licensing and planning, they built the new Sun Recycling facility with the goal of sending no material to a landfill. Today, their facility receives 125 to 200 truckloads of waste material every day, six days a week. They deploy dumpsters and roll-off trucks throughout the DC region. Loads of construction and demolition debris, asphalt, dirt, metals, drywall, wood, carpeting, furniture and other waste materials are all dropped on the facility’s tipping floor. Then, one of the 818s goes to work.

Keeping pace with waste

Employing about 50 workers and drivers, the whole operation takes place under roof, in a fully enclosed building. Metals and concrete are sold into recycling markets. The residual stream goes to a nearby energy-from-waste producer. Cycle times are critical. “We cannot be down,” says Shipp. “We only have 250 yards of metal storage in three bunkers; and another two bunkers for concrete. However, we do not have the capacity to store our residual material stream. We have to truck material out immediately. We watch those numbers pretty closely day-to-day, to make sure we are moving out at least as much as we are bringing in.”

Up to the task

Finding the right machine to feed the shredder non-stop in a harsh environment turned out to be a simple search. Shipp and Springer enjoy a solid relationship with Midlantic Equipment, their SENNEBOGEN dealer. “We needed an additional machine, and our territory representative at Midlantic, Shane Pinzka, was able to demonstrate an 818 quickly,” says Shipp.

The load-out solution

A continuous stream of walking floor trailers is ready to transport the plant’s residual material to an energy plant. “Residual” covers about 40% of the material processed here. The need to move product efficiently into the trailers led to Sun Services’ purchase of the second 818 M.“We made some changes to the building to improve our load out,” Shipp explains. “We had been using our wheel loaders, but we realized that another 818 would be the best fit for that end of the operation.” With the 818’s serial elevating cab, operators are able to see into the trailer as they place the materials, so they can fill holes and finish the load quickly. According to Springer, the operators are also pleased with the new machines because the cab offers enough space and is a comfortable place to spend a working day at.

Three to stay ready

The latest addition to Shipp and Springer’s SENNEBOGEN fleet is identical to the first two machines. Again, the driving factor behind the purchase was efficiency. Day-to-day, the 818s are keeping up with the demands of the pace and the working environment. According to Shipp, “Their downtime for general maintenance and blowing out the machine because of over-heating has come to a minimum. We used to have to do that all the time. These 818s have been a great addition to our fleet.” All SENNEBOGEN machines are equipped with powerful reversing fans to help them run cool in harsh conditions like this. For an extra boost, the Sun Services units were fitted with a custom pre-cleaner.

Mantsinen brings a new material handling machine, Mantsinen 140, to the market. It is the first portal machine of this size with turning wheels, which enables sideways movement and efficient use in limited space. Other manufacturers do not have an equivalent option available.

Mantsinen 140 is designed mainly to be used at ports in loading and unloading ships, but it is also great in pulp and steel mills in feeding operations and terminal works.

– 140 model, positioned between 120 and 160 models, completes our material handling offering. It is a natural step for clients who are looking for more tons per hour from their material handling machine without significantly bigger investment. Mantsinen 140 machines are already delivered and sold to several countries, although the official launch is in the beginning of September in our distributor meeting, says Tapio Pirinen, Vice President of Material Handling Machinery at Mantsinen.

Competitive edge for clients and Mantsinen

Mantsinen 140 offers notable competitive advantages. The machine is designed for long lifetime and it is efficient, safe and maintenance friendly. Undercarriage, power line and optional equipment are the same as in all the other Mantsinen material handling machines.

– The lifetime expectancy of the machine is in its own league, and it also has Hybrilift® that makes it up to 50% more energy efficient. For maintenance work, it has a machine room with a roof on top. Mantsinen Telematics System makes IoT a part of material handling; it transfers important machine and operational data to cloud service, including for example handled tons, hydraulic pressures, temperatures and electronic service follow-up, Pirinen sums.

– Typically, in the course of time clients go from a smaller machine to a bigger one when the efficiency demands grow. The new machine handles significantly more tons in an hour than a smaller machine. Thanks to our assembly plant in Rauma seaport, Finland, we can deliver fully assembled ready-to-use machine for the client on demand. This way the client can start working immediately when the machine arrives, and there is no operational disturbances at all.

Strong professional partner

All Mantsinen material handling machines are manufactured at Ylämylly factory in Finland. Mantsinen 140 was developed in only 1,5 years. The versatile product offering now has machines in all size ranges together with large selection of attachments. – We have skilled employees, and over 50 years of experience as a logistics contractor. User perspective is very strongly present in our machines, and we value user feedback highly. With this new machine we can serve clients even better.

Rostock (Germany), August 16, 2019 – during a ceremony, Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH officially inaugurated its new heavy-duty gantry crane TCC 78000 at the Rostock Overseas Port. It will not only support the family business Liebherr with the loading and assembly of ever larger maritime cranes from its own production, but will also offer other companies the opportunity to handle heavy loads at Rostock Port.

“Three, two, one… go” – On this command the Minister of Economics, Employment and Health of the state of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania, Harry Glawe together with his colleague Mr. Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitisation of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania and Mrs. Patricia Rüf as well as Mrs. Stéfanie Wohlfarth as members of the Liebherr family pressed the blue button at the foot of the 164-metre-high heavy-duty gantry crane. A horn sounds and the TCC 78000 begins to raise a large Liebherr flag to a height of over 120 metres. The official inauguration ceremony marks the beginning of a new era in heavy load handling for Liebherr Rostock and the Port of Rostock.

“Thanks to its unique combination of lifting height and capacity, the TCC 78000 has the best technical potential available to safely and economically assemble and load the next generation of maritime cranes,” summarised Leopold Berthold, Managing Director of Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH, in his welcoming speech.

TCC is the abbreviation for Travelling Cargo Crane. The rail-mounted heavy-duty crane will move on a portal between the northern Liebherr plant site and the adjacent quay edge. With its maximum lifting capacity of 1,600 tonnes and a total height of 164 metres with the jib raised, the TCC 78000 will characterise the appearance of Rostock harbour in future. Equipped with a double bogeys (two rails per side) and a track gauge of 30 metres, the gantry crane provides optimum flexibility for handling all types of large goods.

Liebherr is not the only one benefiting from these new and important perspectives. The rail-mounted gantry crane will also offer other companies the opportunity to handle heavy loads at Rostock Port.

“With this impressive crane, the Hanseatic City of Rostock has gained another landmark, which at the same time is a symbol for the success story of Liebherr in the overseas port of Rostock. The heavy-duty gantry crane improves the opportunities for further company settlements and the acquisition of extremely heavy project cargoes. This potential must be enhanced together,” says Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT GmbH.

The installation of the TCC 78000 is also an investment for Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH in the new heavy-duty handling industry. The new offered service will have a positive impact on the port of Rostock and the entire region.

“This heavy-duty crane is a substantial improvement for the infrastructure in the port of Rostock. The investment demonstrates the company’s confidence in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as an attractive business location. Today Liebherr is a major player in the manufacturing industry and one of the most important employers in the region,” emphasised Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Economics Minister Harry Glawe at today’s inauguration ceremony.

Overall, Liebherr is investing around 45 million euros in the new crane system. The TCC 78000 will have its first major operation at the end of this year. At that time it will lift the offshore crane HLC (Heavy Lift Crane) 295000 – the most powerful crane Liebherr has ever built – onto the special ship “Orion”.

The family company uses the mobile scrap specialist with a 129 kW diesel engine for on-site sorting, loading and processing of old scrap. The family company uses the mobile scrap specialist with a 129 kW diesel engine for on-site sorting, loading and processing of old scrap.

Flexibility required for material range

Each month 4,500 tons of mixed old scrap are delivered to the 12,000 square meter site to be processed and recycled. It consists mainly of non-ferrous metals and scrap cable that can be processed further both nationally and internationally. “We need specific storage areas for the 50 different types of scrap that we sort on a daily basis and this automatically reduces the space we have for machines. For this reason, we need a very agile but at the same time robust solution, which we have found in our SENNEBOGEN 825 E,” explains SWRN’s Technical Director, Robin Reindel.

In addition to the machine’s compact size, the stick’s quick change system contributes to the machine’s on-site flexibility. “We can react quickly to the different material types and, where necessary, switch immediately between the orange peel grab and the magnet plate,” says Reindel.

Multi-functional, safe and comfortable

The standard at SENNEBOGEN is to never build a standard machine – this is true of SWRN’s 825 E which has numerous features that cater for the customer’s individual requirements. In addition to the extraordinary customer-colored paint job, those responsible also chose the spacious Maxcab Industry, which can be elevated by up to 2.7 meters, with continuous windshield and bullet proof glass. This guarantees that the operator can both see their work area without anything getting in the way and also be as safe as possible.

The 14 meter long equipment is perfectly suited to the challenging tasks on site. The quick change system means that the orange peel grab or the magnet plate can be fitted in minutes. The magnet plate is run from an additional 15 kW magnet generator. The generator and the machine’s hydraulic system are finely coordinated to achieve the best energy efficiency levels.

Personal service

In addition to the quality of SENNEBOGEN’s material handlers, Robin Reindel says the intensive personal contact from sales and service partner IBS Baumaschinen was also a decisive factor in the purchase decision. “Our contact person is just around the corner, in the neighborhood. We know that we can expect any service related queries to be handled quickly and reliably, which is very important to us!”

Mantsinen Group, specializing in material handling machines and logistic services, will invest over 12 million euros in their factory facilities and equipment. The investment will be focused at a new production and office space, milling boring center and surface treatment line. This will be the most extensive onetime investment in production technology the company has made. The main reason behind the investment is the rapid growth rate of sales of material handling machines during the previous years. Moreover, the company forecasts to double the turnover in the following decade, 2020s. Heavy material handling machines and hydraulic harbor cranes have been gaining market from traditional solutions, thus speeding up the growth of Mantsinen sales. This is an extensive investment for us, but on the other hand, only one phase of our comprehensive investment program, says Mia Mantsinen, CEO of the company. This type of investment is done for long run, and investment needs to adapt to future needs for decades to come. Modern equipment and spaces also add to the safety and ergonomic of the employees, and therefore hopefully to the well-being at work.

– New milling boring center and surface treatment line will meet both the existing and future needs in regards to size, capacity and functionality. Over 3,000m2 (32,000 sq. ft) of new production space will be built, encompassing an assembly space in addition to the equipment. This relates to a growth of over 30 per cent in our current production spaces, Mia Mantsinen notes.

Mantsinen has recruited over 30 new people in the last years, and the organizational growth is expected to continue along with the investment. Even now, the company is seeking skilled persons for multiple positions from production to customer service to management.

Strong both locally and globally

The construction will start in the coming fall and the project is due to finish in the fall of 2020. The intensity of the project schedule is fitting for a company that has always wanted to challenge itself. With the intense growth, the roots of our company increases in meaning.– Our people have an amazing spirit of doing. We do this with a passion and we are strongly committed to continuously create new solutions to material handling community. On our way to a global influencer, we want to maintain the same spirit of entrepreneurship we have had for over 50 years. It is important for me that we continue to stay devoted to our values and our way of doing this in the future.

“After discussing the project specific needs, the RL 2650 is the most suitable product to meet the requirements since it is the only crane which provides the lifting capacity of 75 tonnes while complying with the weight requirements”, said Daniel Poll, Sales Director Liebherr Ship and Offshore Cranes. “Due to its dimensions and the specific adaptions, it is the optimal product for this project”, he adds. The cylinder luffing crane is characterised by a box boom and a compact structure. Its pedestal has a diameter of less than three metres. To guarantee the required lifting capacity of 75 tonnes the crane will be equipped with a reinforced slewing bearing and slewing column. This special solution provides the optimum structure to lift heavy parts with a weight of up to 75 tonnes and also combines compactness and high lifting capacities. Furthermore it keeps the crane’s weight low.

Rostock (Germany), May 2019 – The Port Esbjerg is gearing up for future business and opted for the world’s largest mobile harbour crane, the Liebherr LHM 800 with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 308 tonnes.
Since 1874, the Port of Esbjerg has been the main centre for sea carriage and trade between Denmark and the rest of the world. Today, the Port of Esbjerg is an international, multimodal transport centre and an important Scandinavian gateway to the whole world. More than 200 companies are located at the port with a total staff of up to 10,000 people.

The number of crane tasks at the Port Esbjerg is growing, having increased up by 66% in just four years. Accordingly, the port is now expanding its crane capacity with the world’s largest harbour crane, the Liebherr LHM 800. The new machine has a total height of 48 metres and a boom length of 66 metres. ”We are experiencing a growth in high and heavy cargo, and that makes new demands on our crane capacity,” explains Dennis Jul Pedersen, Port CEO at the Port Esbjerg. The new crane has a lifting capacity of 308 tonnes. The crane will arrive at the Port of Esbjerg in August. The Port Esbjerg already has the largest fleet of Liebherr cranes in Scandinavia and is now expanding it further.

New opportunities opening up

The need for the new crane is prompted by developments in the offshore industry especially; partly because the components for the wind turbines in the North Sea are getting bigger and bigger. However, other industries at the port may also benefit from the crane, e.g. for the handling of heavy machinery and production equipment.

”The crane gives us much greater cargo handling flexibility. In addition to single lifts of over 300 tons, the new crane will allow us to carry out tandem lifts with two of our largest cranes together lifting up to 448 tonnes,” says Dennis Jul Pedersen.

While the trend on the market tends to be “go big or go home”, the Finland-based material handling machine manufacturer Mantsinen Group Ltd Oy swims against the current. Mantsinen launched world’s largest material handling machine Mantsinen 300 already two years ago and paved the way for evolution on the market. Mantsinen is well known for “from bigger to smaller” approach for their large-scale large-capacity machines and Mantsinen 60 will forge ahead the approach by setting new lifetime expectancy for material handling machines in 60-70 t category. -We have an outstanding offering for large-capacity machines, and now we are aiming to offer our clients something more targeted and tailored for especially round-wood and scrap handling, Mr. Tapio Pirinen, Vice President for Mantsinen Material Handling Machinery presents. Indeed, nowadays more is not necessarily more in material handling, but the key factor seems to be the combination of optimal features for the task at hand and long lifetime expectancy for the machine. The Mantsinen 60 carries all the operation-proven Mantsinen qualities in a condensed package. Combining agility, intelligence and strength, the Mantsinen 60 also comes equipped with the Mantsinen Telematics Systems (MTS) as standard, and it is optimized for mid-scale material handling. – We want to offer operation-specific solutions for our customers, Mr. Pirinen describes.....

Mantsinen 60 carries all the operation-proven Mantsinen qualities in a condensed package. Combining agility, intelligence and strength, the Mantsinen 60 also comes equipped with the Mantsinen Telematics Systems (MTS) as standard, and it is optimized for mid-scale material handling. – We want to offer operation-specific solutions for our customers, Mr. Pirinen describes.

For Mantsinen the main advantage compared to their competitors is the strong experience in hands-on material handling. That gives the company a head start in both machine and attachment R&D and consulting sales. – It can’t be denied, that an industry-specific practical know-how is a great asset in our line of business. For example, when it comes to round-wood, through our own Logistics Services – business unit, the company possess in-house experience of handling over 500 000 000m3 over the years which creates unbeatable foundation to our proposals. We know exactly which specific demands and challenges our clients face, and we can offer solutions to their challenges, Tapio Pirinen concludes.
