This summer AUMUND Fördertechnik GmbH will be supplying an AUMUND Arched Plate Conveyor to Mytilineos S.A. in Agios Nikolaos on the Gulf of Corinth in Greece. This is the location at which the Mytilineos metallurgy and technology group operates a plant which produces aluminium in a two-step process.

After mining and processing the bauxite, Mytilineos produces alumina from the enriched ore, which forms the basis for the electrolytic production of metallic aluminium in Agios Nikolaos. The conveying process in the plant consists of discharging bauxite from a silo, and onward transportation to a rod mill by an AUMUND Arched Plate Conveyor type BPB 250-1200. This is a specialised requirement in terms of both the material and the application. In designing the Arched Plate Conveyor, AUMUND Fördertechnik had to consider among other things the specific material properties of bauxite, such as abrasiveness, dustiness, angle of repose and also the fact that it can sometimes be sticky.

A major advantage in winning the order was being able to arrange the customer’s visit to a cement plant in Volos, where a similar AUMUND Arched Plate Conveyor is in operation.

Conveying technology from AUMUND is now also in demand within the Dubai based Group, Al Khaleej Sugar, one of the largest sugar producers in the world. The first order is from its Egyptian subsidiary, Canal Sugar, for a CENTREX^® Discharge System and two AUMUND Bucket Apron Conveyors. Intense negotiations between the Al Khaleej Sugar Group and the AUMUND Fördertechnik GmbH Branch Office in Dubai led to the award of the order. The two AUMUND Bucket Apron Conveyors will be fabricated in stainless steel. All of the equipment will be on site before the end of this year.

Canal Sugar is constructing a new sugar production plant near Beni Suef.

It is the largest agro-industrial project in Egypt since 1952. The Canal Sugar Refinery will be able to process 5.4 million tons of sugar beet per season.

AUMUND Fördertechnik already supplied the CENTREX^® Discharge System type CTX 8000, which has a diameter of 8 m, in March this year.

The CENTREX is in ATEX (explosion proof) design and will be installed in a silo which extends approximately 65 m underground.

The silo holds around 400,000 tons of refined sugar and is therefore the largest of its kind in the world. The discharge capacity of the CENTREX^® is up to 300 tph of sugar, which will be transported onwards to the packing plant by the AUMUND Bucket Apron Conveyor type BZB 1400/400. The BZB is approximately 145 m long with a vertical lift of about 103 m. The second AUMUND Bucket Apron Conveyor ordered by Canal Sugar is of the type BZB 1600/400 and has a capacity of up to 400 tph. It will operate as a collecting conveyor under the sugar centrifuges.

“I’m delighted to chair PEMA’s Equipment Design and Infrastructure Committee. I have an excellent contact network of people across a number of segments, so I offer an open window to different sectors. I have most experience in bulk handling – one of the sectors where PEMA is now attracting members. This is vital if we are to advance PEMA’s work on building the mutual exchange of information and learning best practice from across different sectors,” says de Michieli.

“As chair of the Design and Infrastructure Committee, my main goal is to increase the number of active members, and to motivate more passive members to be more active, so as to establish the right conditions for teamwork. As a chairman, my job is to encourage people to pull together, to work as a team,” adds de Michieli.                   

In February 2019 Pietro de Michieli already took over the Vice Chairman of the Safety and Environment Committee. The mission of the PEMA Safety & Environment Committee is to provide a neutral information and education platform on the development and use of safer and greener technologies in the port and terminal industries. As part of this effort, the Committee works with other port and cargo handling associations, as well as individual companies, to keep abreast of the latest trends and initiatives, and inform PEMA members and the wider community accordingly.

The Port of Rosyth welcomed their new SAMSON ecological hopper into the port for commissioning. The hopper is the first of its kind in the UK and will be a key component of the port’s new agri-bulk hub facility for Cefetra.

Forth Ports owns and manages eight commercial ports across the UK including the Port of Rosyth which is strategically located for road and rail and provides an important connection with mainland Europe and the UK. The Port of Rosyth is currently in an exciting phase of development with a multimillion pound investment to provide a dedicated
agri-bulk facility for Cefetra. The new terminal and improved storage facilities will deliver increased annual throughput and storage capacity positioning Rosyth as the main agri-hub for Scotland.

In developing this new agri-hub the safety of staff and protection of the environment is paramount.  Forth Ports chose a SAMSON Eco Hopper to receive dry bulk materials as it offers a high and reliable import capacity whilst minimising the escape of dust and it is equipped with a host of safety measures to ensure effective and safe performance.

The new SAMSON Eco Hopper arrived at the Port of Rosyth earlier this month and it will now be installed and commissioned to receive dry bulk materials such as grain and aggregates.

“We are very pleased and excited to be working with such an important and respected Port Operator as Forth Ports and to provide one of our ecological hoppers for their new
agri-bulk terminal project at Rosyth” says Dale Lockley, Managing Director of SAMSON Materials Handling.  “The Forth Ports Group has considerable experience with the SAMSON range of equipment as there is already SAMSON ship loading and stockpiling equipment operating at their other ports, but this is the first Eco Hopper at Forth Ports, indeed the first SAMSON Eco Hopper in the UK”

Commenting on the hopper in Rosyth, Derek Knox, Senior Port Manager said: “It’s great to welcome the new SAMSON eco hopper into Rosyth. We are investing in our port to ensure the most efficient, dust free agri-hub for Cefetra as well as other bulk customers. We look forward to using the hopper on the next grain shipment due into the port in September. We have a strong relationship with SAMSON and have had a great experience with their market leading equipment.”

Operation of the SAMSON Eco Hopper is straightforward.  As dry bulk materials such as grain arrive by sea they are offloaded into the hoppers using mobile harbour cranes.  At a little over 18m in height and made of reinforced steel the Eco Hopper provides a sturdy and solid reception unit.  The Eco Hopper is topped by a tapered inlet shroud which minimises any dust generation caused by cross winds.  As the crane grab discharges the load, dust filter units situated on three sides of the hopper will keep any fugitive dust from spreading.  The grain then falls through the “Flex-Flap” dust seal system which contains any further dust.  Material is discharged from the hopper via a dual outlet fitted with two telescopic cascade discharge chutes. This allows a single truck to be loaded by two chutes simultaneously thus increasing the average loading speed.  Material passes through the SAMSON Eco Hopper at a peak rate of 1200 tph.  The unit is wheel mounted which allows it to be positioned across the port in different locations as required and to be moved clear to allow other port operations to continue when not in use.

The SAMSON Eco Hopper benefits from a variety of safety measures: a storm anchor system (comprising of chains, shackles and attachments to secure the equipment during high winds), ready-to-load traffic lights and sounders, working lighting and safety overload protection.  The operators’ cabin is climate controlled and provides a 360 degree view of the operation while accessing all controls.  There is also a hand-held pendant operator remote control unit.

Forth Ports Rosyth is the first UK port to install a SAMSON Eco Hopper to provide dust controlled import facilities for its new agri-hub.

In December 2018, AUMUND Fördertechnik GmbH, Germany, will dispatch an HBI evaporation cooler system

The greenfield project will utilise the existing port infrastructure on Lake Erie, and MIDREX was selected as general contractor to supply the direct reduction plant.

German conveying equipment specialist AUMUND, as subcontractor to MIDREX, is supplying one of the most important elements of the whole process, the HBI cooling lines. The decision-makers involved in the project have given their vote of confidence to the evaporation cooling process patented by AUMUND. In this HBI-Slow-Cooling process, the HBI product to be conveyed is cooled from 750 to 90 degrees Celsius in a process which protects the integrity of the product. AUMUND guarantees a handling throughput of up to 285 tph at a nominal conveying capacity of 142 tph.

The first installation of its kind was successfully completed by AUMUND in Venezuela in 2006. After this pilot project, AUMUND won further HBI orders in Russia and the United States. “Today, after constant optimisation of details, the technology has reached such a state of maturity that both operators and general contractors increasingly favour the AUMUND solution over traditional methods”, says AUMUND’s Sales Director Metallurgy, Matthias Moritz.
