GEORGE THE ORANGUTAN: A playful trickster with a big heart – Sponsorship
George, a ten-year-old male orangutan residing at the Samboja Lestari Rehabilitation Centre, continues to charm everyone around him with his mischievous spirit and vibrant energy. Having arrived at the centre in May 2015, George currently lives in the Socialisation Enclosure, where he shares a close bond with his longtime companion, Harriet.
Harriet used to be under our care until she officially graduated from Forest School. However, assessments concluded that she is not eligible for reintroduction into the wild and is now residing in Socialisation Complex B, where she has recently been joined by George. In light of this, E-Crane is proud to extend its support to George as he embarks on his rehabilitation journey towards eventual release into his natural habitat.
George thrives in the company of Harriet, often seen grooming and relaxing beside her in a display of mutual trust and affection. Their interactions are calm and cooperative, reflecting a deep and positive bond.
George’s days are filled with a mix of curiosity and constant movement. He is frequently observed swinging on his hammock or engaging with enrichment items. He builds what appears to be a cozy shelter, showing an unusual attention to detail as he arranges branches, leaves, and objects. But true to his unpredictable nature, the shelter is rarely left intact for long. He seems to find more joy in the process of building and tearing down than in having a place to rest. It’s a perfect reflection of his ever-curious spirit, always engaged in the act of discovery.
George’s playful personality shines in his interactions with both staff and visitors. He loves shredding enrichment sacks, tossing leaves, and playfully reaching through the bars to touch boots or hands. When new faces appear, he often stretches out his hand as if to invite them to join in his fun. Sometimes, he’ll even offer a leafy “gift” only to snatch it back with a cheeky grin.
Feeding time is another highlight for George. He’s developed a strong liking for banana stems and young coconut shoots, but still has no love for chayote, which he occasionally spits out dramatically.
In spite of his mischief, George is in excellent health (BCS 3) and continues to show positive social and behavioral development. He is making consistent progress. With his strong health, endless energy, and increasing independence, he’s displaying all the right signs as he moves toward his eventual release.
George’s story is one of resilience, curiosity, and the joyful spirit of an orangutan who, even within enclosure walls, finds endless ways to explore, connect, and entertain.
