Fednav International Ltd. (FIL) operates a modern fleet of 100 to 125 bulk carriers as part of its dry bulk shipping business and is the leading international user of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System. Its ocean freight operation annually transports over 30 million tonnes of bulk cargoes worldwide. Operating a versatile fleet of Handysize, Handymax, Supramax, and Panamax bulk carriers, FIL is renowned for its ice-trading expertise and boasts the world’s largest fleet of ice-class bulk vessels.

 

Fednav Atlantic Lakes Line (FALLine), a division of Fednav International Ltd., has operated a scheduled cargo liner service from Europe to ports along the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence system since 1959. By offering a value-added liner shipping service beyond conventional ocean transport, it provides a regular westbound service connecting Northern Europe to the industrial heartland of North America. Emphasizing flexible scheduling to meet specific customer needs, FALLine carries a mix of steel products, project, and breakbulk cargoes.

The line offers twice-monthly sailings from Antwerp and monthly sailings from the Weser River during the regular season. Customary ports of discharge include Sorel, Hamilton, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Burns Harbor, Thunder Bay, and Duluth. Today, FALLine continues to extend its partnership with long-standing customers in the areas of logistics and inventory control, while focusing on cultivating new relationships.

 

 

As a pioneering presence in Canada’s Arctic for over 60 years, Fednav’s Arctic Operations and Projects is responsible for Fednav’s mining and resupply transportation activities in the Arctic. Today, Fednav transports more than two million tonnes annually from remote Northern mines and has participated in every major shipping project in the Canadian Arctic. In 1998, it became the first company to provide unescorted, year-round shipping with the first winter voyage from Deception Bay.

Fednav owns and operates the Arctic, an oil-bulk-ore ice-breaking vessel, the Umiak I, and the Nunavik, the most powerful icebreaking bulk carriers in the world that operate independently in the harsh polar environment and provide total transportation solutions to Canada’s northern mines. In September 2014, Fednav’s Nunavik was the first commercial vessel to completely transit the Northwest Passage unescorted, with Arctic cargo and Canadian expertise.

 

Fednav’s Shipowning and Technical Services Department oversees the technical management of Fednav’s owned fleet of 65 bulk carriers including its high ice class Arctic fleet, to ensure that all vessels are maintained and operated in line with Fednav’s best-in-class standards in a safe, environmentally friendly, and efficient manner. The team is comprised of engineers, naval architects, and maritime specialists who are responsible for the owned fleet throughout the lifespan of our ships. In close cooperation with our shipmanagers the team members support the seafarers on board, continuously improve our ship designs, oversee ship new building and vessel maintenance, and manage fleet operating standards and costs. The department also renders support and assistance for our chartered-in fleet.

Enfotec Technical Services Inc., a subsidiary of Fednav Limited, provides support to enhance the safety and efficiency of navigation in ice and produces sea ice assessments and marine accessibility studies for current and projected shipping operations in ice-covered waters. Enfotec supports Fednav’s operations in the Arctic and the Baltic regions with our expertise in ice dynamics and remote sensing. Enfotec recently won the IBJ award for Innovative Technology for its IceNav, its proprietary ice navigation system.

A subsidiary of Fednav Limited, Federal Marine Terminals, Inc. (FMT) delivers customized cargo handling services and is recognized as an industry leader in marine terminal operations. For over five decades, FMT has operated stevedoring facilities at ports in the US and Canada. With 11 facilities, FMT is active along the US East Coast, in the Gulf of Mexico, and on the Great Lakes. FMT offers stevedoring, terminal handling, and logistics services for all types of dry cargo, and partners with business associates to offer a seamless supply chain in the markets served.
