CMP orders 8 straddle carriers and 2 STS cranes from Konecranes for the new container terminal in Copenhagen
Konecranes has won a public tender from Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) to supply container handling equipment for a new container terminal in Copenhagen. Eight hybrid straddle carriers will be delivered in Q4 2023, and two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes are scheduled for delivery in Q1 2025. The order was booked in Q2 2023.
The existing container terminal in Copenhagen will move a few kilometers to a better location in Ydre Nordhavn. It will be completed by 2025. CMP is responsible for the operational activities and for the machines that that will handle containers at the terminal.
The two STS cranes on order are the monobox type with an outreach of 42m and a lifting capacity of 65 tons to load and unload container ships 14 container rows across. They are engineered around the Core of Lifting platform with purpose-designed gears, motors and controls for safe and accurate container handling. Operating on mains electric power, the STSs produce no local emissions.

In our evaluation process, sustainability was one of the most important factors. The hybrid straddle carriers from Konecranes provide the same power as fully diesel machines while significantly lowering on-site exhaust emissions,” says Povl Dolleris Røjkjær Ungar, COO, Copenhagen Malmö Port.

CMP’s 8 hybrid Konecranes Noell straddle carriers on order have a lifting capacity of up to 60 tons and a twin-lift spreader for efficient container handling. An integrated verified gross mass (VGM) system makes compliance with SOLAS regulations quick and easy. Position detection based on DGPS improves accuracy in moving and locating containers across the storage yard. The hybrid design uses an onboard, fuel-optimized HVO*-compatible generator set to minimize emissions while charging the battery, and recovered braking energy tops up the battery charge.
