CAN COAL MAKE A COMEBACK? | SANDWICH BELT CONVEYORS FOR COAL

In 2011, the U.S. coal industry was flourishing, buoyed by recovering demand after the Great Recession and record-high global prices. U.S. coal company stock prices soared as the industry seemed poised for continued growth.

By the end of 2015, however, the situation had taken a dramatic turn. The industry faced a steep decline, with three of the four largest U.S. coal miners filing for bankruptcy, alongside numerous smaller companies.

In March 2017, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order aimed at rolling back many Obama-era environmental regulations, with a promise to coal miners that they would soon be “going back to work.”

Fast forward to Trump’s 2024 reelection, and the campaign rhetoric centered on providing relief from what were seen as burdensome tax policies under President Biden’s administration – particularly for American coal, oil, and gas producers. Trump’s election win provided an immediate boost to coal company share prices. On November 6, 2024, stocks for major coal producers such as Arch Resources and Consol Energy surged 12%, while Peabody Energy rose by 10%. Meanwhile, the broader S&P 500 index gained 2.5%.

Looking ahead, the upcoming changes under the new administration could signal a new chapter for U.S. coal. A recent EPA rule aimed at accelerating the closure of coal plants is expected to be reversed in January, which could reignite interest in thermal coal production. As a result, coal companies are likely to see a sharp revaluation, especially those focused on thermal coal.
