Liebherr Board offshore cranes equip floating production unit of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries

• Two Liebherr Board offshore cranes 4200 are installed on a floating production unit being built by South Korean shipyard HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
• With a lifting capacity of up to 44 tonnes and 64 metres maximum outreach, the cranes demonstrate robust offshore capability.
• The delivery of the cranes to the shipyard is scheduled for the second half of 2025.

South Korean company HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build and equip a floating production unit (FPU) with two Board offshore cranes, BOS 4200, manufactured by Liebherr. The FPU is currently under construction for an offshore project in Mexico. The BOS crane series known for its reliability since 1975 is ideal for high lifting capacities at medium or high outreaches.

Rostock (Germany), September 2025 – Liebherr lifts offshore ambitions with BOS cranes for Mexican Gulf deployment. The BOS 4200 selected for this deployment stands out for its technical configuration and design. It is considered one of the most powerful and versatile machines for supplying offshore platforms and performing maintenance work.

The contracting entity for the semi-submersible FPU is a global energy company headquartered in Australia. The FPU is currently being built by HD Hyundai at its shipyard in Ulsan, a major port city in southeastern South Korea. The Liebherr cranes will be delivered to the port by the end of the year and subsequently installed on the FPU. To minimise erection time, the cranes leave Rostock fully assembled, which is a major advantage of the Rostock location that streamlines the installation process.

The final destination for the BOS cranes is the Trion field in the Gulf of Mexico. The Trion field is situated 180 kilometres off the Mexican coast, approximately 30 kilometres south of the maritime border between Mexico and the United States.

Reliable equipment for offshore success

The compact and function-oriented design makes the Board offshore crane series one of the most successful products on the offshore crane segment at Liebherr. The rope luffing system is integrated into an A-frame structure, ensuring enhanced stability and reliable performance. The slewing platform serves as the foundation of the crane, supporting key components including the cabin, the A-frame and the luffing winch. For efficient operation during low-light conditions, high-intensity LEDs and fluorescent lighting are installed across essential areas such as the boom, slewing platform, and machine housing.

Special conditions call for unique demands

The cranes are equipped with the Liebherr Litronic crane control system. The modular system ensures highly efficient, smooth, and precise operation. The integrated monitoring system displays all essential crane data, such as radius, engine speed or current load. One of the cranes is equipped with a tugger winch system, which allows an optimisation of the minimum working radius. Designed to operate across a wide temperature range, all components are both shock proof and resistant to humidity. The BOS 4200 cranes operate under intensive circumstances and must withstand extreme climate – high humidity, salty air and strong wind and waves. In response to such conditions, the standard coating features a multilayer paint system for enhanced resilience.
